Rickie Fowler Ready to Do the “Mickelson Double”

Rickie Fowler made a spectacular charge down the stretch to win the Scottish Open as he birdied the last hole to pull one clear of fellow American Matt Kuchar.

Fowler seemed to be treading water for most of the final round at Gullane Golf Club but he put the hammer down when he needed to.  fowler scottish open

After a bogey at fourteen he went back to back with birdies on fifteen and sixteen and capped it off with brilliant play on the final hole.

With Kuchar in the clubhouse at eleven under Fowler blasted a drive down the eighteenth fairway and then striped an iron that settled just two feet from the hole. His tap in birdie gave him his second win of the season to go with his PLAYERS Championship.

Fowler who is another of Butch Harmon’s boys took some inspiration from Phil Mickelson while the two had breakfast together to start the day.

“I had breakfast with Phil this morning and he made sure I was well aware what he had done two years ago in winning the Scottish Open and then The Open, so I told him I would try and take care of the first leg of it, so I got that done,” Fowler said.

“Phil has always been a role model to me and a huge help, and someone I love spending time with on and off the golf course.

“I have learned a lot from Phil as he is a great professional.”

Fowler has grown to love links golf and he’s primed for a charge at the Open Championship and optimistic about his future.

I am very excited to win the Scottish Open and hopefully it will move me forward and to having a great week at St Andrews, and you never know that down the road there could be some good tussles with me, Rory and Jordan.”
