Sneak Peek: St. Andrews Old Course No.17 & No.18

The closing two holes at St. Andrews are two of the most famous in all of golf. The instantly recognizable Road Hole is often called the toughest hole in championship golf. At 495 yards it’s a man size hole with man size challenges. An intimidating blind tee shot of hitting over the faux coal sheds is followed by a demanding approach to a small, tricky green guarded by the newly expanded Road Hole Bunker. And don’t forget the “road” and the wall that are both in play behind the green. It’s fun to watch from a distance but a chore to play.

There is no experience in golf quite like coming down the fairway of the home hole at St. Andrews. Named for Old Tom Morris himself, there is nothing that compares to the drama, excitement or history of St. Andrews framed in the distance, the Swilcan Bridge or the Valley of Sin. A short par 4 at 357 yards and drivable with the favoring wind there’s a chance for birdie here. But with out of bounds and the dangerous Valley of Sin awaiting wayward shots Old Tom Morris can certainly exact a measure of pain from a golfer. History will be made here on Sunday as one golfer becomes The Champion Golfer of the Year.
