Jason Day Bounces Back to Win RBC Canadian Open

Jason Day didn’t show any ill effects from his near miss at the Open Championship last week as he finished strong to win the RBC Canadian Open.

He started the day two shots off the lead of Canadian David Hearn and playing in the next to last group.

He already had birdied sixteen and seventeen when he was eyeing a 21 footer for birdie on eighteen. He said it was a very similar putt to the one he left short at St. Andrews to miss out on the playoff. He wasn’t about to leave this one short.

“I got the ball to the hole this time,” he said.day canadian

Day has been painfully close to breaking through for his first major win and while the Canadian Open isn’t in that class he still values a win at this historic event and knows each week is a learning experience.

“To be able to put yourself in contention so many times, especially in major events, and just fall short, even going back to last week, leaving the putt short, not being able to get into the playoff, it was frustrating. It was disappointing,” Day said.

“Even though I knew that I played great, I knew that I had to focus on this week. So when I actually had the same putt, it was a very similar putt on the 72nd hole today, the same thing was going through my mind: ‘Make sure you get it to the hole.’”

“I’ve had nothing but support this week. The Canadian fans have been fantastic to me. It’s just tremendous to have the trophy and put my name on the trophy. I’m down in history now. It’s just a really good feeling. Whenever you win an Open Championship of any country, you’re doing something good. For it to come after what happened last week and to be able to sink that putt, I’m just over the moon right now.
