Inbee Park: Doing Something Really Special

There is something special and wonderful going on in golf and most sports fans and golf fans are missing it.

Inbee Park is one special golfer. The number one player in women’s golf is crafting a resume that screams “All Time Great” but the average golf fan wouldn’t know her if she whacked them over the head with her very reliable putter.park british tear

Park closed out the field at the Ricoh Women’s British Open today to win her second major in ’15 and win for the fourth time this season.

In doing so she earned her seventh major championship and completed the career grand slam. Yes, the LPGA still has another major this season at the Evian but with a nod to tradition any player that wins four majors is credited with the grand slam. (Winning five is called the super grand glam.)

Park has had a spell of dominance that is rarely seen in golf no matter the gender. Consider this: of the last fourteen majors Park has won six of them. That’s not just good, that great…a great era of dominance that puts a player in the Hall of Fame.

Park is the third youngest golfer to claim seven majors with only Tiger Woods and Mickey Wright winning at a younger age. And only seven female golfers have won more majors: Patty Berg (15), Wright (13), Louise Suggs (11), Annika Sorenstam (10) Babe Zaharias (10) and Betsy Rawls (8).

She’ll try for the super grand slam next month at the Evian Championship and her chances are fairly good having won that event before it was designated a major.

Park doesn’t overpower a course but hits it straight with a swing that makes Ernie Els look like he’s in fast motion.

She is acknowledged by all as the best putter on tour, maybe all tours and when she gets that working there is no stopping her.

Unfortunately for Park and the LPGA she’s not a household name and probably won’t ever be in the states. She’s not an American. She won’t be appearing in the ESPN Body issue. She doesn’t wear skirts up to here. She doesn’t have a big time promotion deal in the U.S.

She’s 27, world number one, a pleasure to watch, speaks perfect English and making history just about every time she tees it up. It’s a shame more golf fans and sports fans aren’t interested.
