Spieth Moves to World No.1

Jordan Spieth fell short of a win at the PGA Championship today but he did get a pleasant consolation prize: he’s now the number one golfer in the world.Day-Spieth

Spieth has had a phenomenal season with four wins including The Masters and the U.S. Open. His dream of the Grand Slam died at the Open Championship and today he barely missed his chance to become the first golfer to win all the majors played on American soil.

Well, “barely missed” is a generous term and Spieth himself knew it himself early on. With Jason Day rocketing his drives 300 plus yards down just about every fairway and his high flying irons floating onto the greens Spieth’s climb was uphill, steeply uphill.

As the two signed their cards Spieth congratulated his friend and opponent and said,”There was nothing I could do.” It meant that Day was at the top of his game and Spieth was over matched, at least on this day.

Spieth raved about Day’s ability to smash it long and straight,”We play a lot of golf and we played a lot of Major Championship rounds together and that was the best I’ve ever seen him play.

Just given the timing of it and whatever, he’s impressive to watch strike the ball, but it was nothing like today. He took it back and he wailed on it and it was a stripe show. It was really a clinic to watch.”

Spieth acknowledges earning the top spot eased his pain today but being the sportsman he is he bowed to Day’s record setting performance today. “Yeah it’s been a very, very good year. There’s nothing — obviously this is as easy a loss as I’ve ever had because I felt that I not only couldn’t do much about it, as the round went on, I also accomplished one of my life-long goals and in the sport of golf. That will never be taken away from me now. I’ll always be a No. 1 player in the world. That’s what, when I look back on this year, the consistency that we have had this year and especially being able to step it up in the biggest stages, that’s a huge confidence builder and that’s what’s allowed us as a team to become the best, the No. 1 ranked, I should say, and I believe right now the best in the world. Second best behind Jason Day, of course, given this week.”

Spieth moves into the top spot in the Official World Golf Rankings. He is followed by Rory McIlroy and with this win Day moves up to number three in the world.

Tell me this game isn’t in great shape.
