10 Things I Think

1. The LPGA had a bit of a break this weekend with the PGA Tour taking a week off from the FedEx Cup Playoffs. And one of their stars came through as Lydia Ko made history once again. Unfortunately it’s all about the NFL now and Ko’s miraculous win gets buried by the beast that is the NFL.

2. Ko is an amazing story and should be getting some more mainstream media coverage. But it doesn’t matter to her. She just keeps on keeping on by setting records, winning tournaments and cashing checks.

3. Lexi Thompson looks like she could play with the big boys on tour. She grew up trying to keep up with her golf playing brothers and it shows in her violent attack on the golf ball. She goes after it with an unmatched intensity and takes a divot like no other player on tour.

4. Ko is the antithesis of Thompson. She appears to be going at fifty per cent on her shots. And sometimes looks like she’s ready for a nice little nap. She’s short off the tee but leads in greens in regulation and putts lights out. She’s the Zach Johnson of the LPGA but even better.

5. Jordan Spieth was hanging out at his beloved Longhorns home game Saturday along with his green jacket. It’s good to be Jordan. But come Sunday night as he watched the Cowboys’ shocking comeback win against the Giants NBC shows a shot of him and Tiger Woods hanging out in a suite at AT&T Stadium but they only identify Woods. I guess they think it is still all about Tiger. They blew it.

6. Buried in the sports news was the American Walker Cup Team getting their ass kicked by Great Britain & Ireland. GB&I won 16 ½ to 9 ½ lead by Ashley Chesters with 3 ½ points. Now that’s one interesting name.

7. Jay Haas may be taking some heat for picking his son, Bill Haas as a Captain’s Pick for the Presidents Cup. I have no problem with that. He was the next in line in the points list and deserving of the selection. My issue is with Phil Mickelson as the other pick. Yes Phil brings experience but he had his day. Move on to the youngbloods who actually are playing well.

8. These past weeks prove that there is some tweaking needed in the Official World Golf Rankings. We saw Rory McIroy and Jordan Spieth swapping spots at number one and two while one wasn’t playing and the other was missing a cut. Rory was home drinking Guinness when he took back the top ranking. Something wrong with that.

9. Spieth was getting ready to lick his wounds as his Cowboys were on the verge of an ugly loss to the Giants on Sunday night. But in a shocking comeback his ‘Boys stole one from the suddenly defenseless Giants.

10. While the Evian was fun and NFL’s opening day is always great the event of the week was the U.S. Open, the tennis open that is. Serena Williams’ try for the Grand Slam was cut short by the unseeded Roberta Vinci who gave the interview if the year and actually apologized to the fans wanting to see Serena make history. Vinci followed her big win by losing to her fellow Italian, Flavia Pennetta in the final and Pennetta promptly announced her retirement. Then Novak Djokovic takes down crowd favorite Roger Federer for his tenth major. It was an exciting and emotional tournament with some very touching stories. And it continues to be one of the very best events in all of sport.
