Tour Championship or Not, Jordan Spieth is Player of the Year

The PGA Tour season comes to and end his week with the Tour Championship at East Lake. And while the lucky golfer is posing with the FedEx Cup and his giant ten million dollar check the Tour will be busy mailing the ballots for Player of the Year.

Plenty has been said and written about the contenders for POY and it all boils down to just Jordan Spieth and Jason Day. Both have had amazing seasons on tour.

The line on Spieth is 4 wins (2 majors), 4 seconds, 1 third and 14 top tens, 4 missed cuts and $10.5 million dollars.

Day’s tally boasts 5 wins (1 major), 1 third, 10 top tens, 2 missed cuts and $9.2 million dollars.

Both players have had hot streaks that would qualify as a career year for many players on tour.spieth day pic

Spieth captivated the golf world with his Masters win and continued his Grand Slam chase with the U.S. Open victory. He had a near miss at the Open Championship and watched up close as Day won his PGA title as Spieth was relegated to second.

Day started his run battling vertigo at the U.S. Open (T9) and was a few inches short of sinking a putt to get into the playoff at the Open Championship (T4). He bounced back with a win the following week at The RBC Canadian and has now won four of his last six starts with include the PGA and two of the three playoff events.

A win at the Tour Championship will give both players the FedEx Cup and further Day’s argument on being deserving of the POY. But it’s an argument, even with a win at East Lake that should be dismissed.

Regardless of what transpires at the Tour Championship Spieth is the Player of the Year.

What was that line used by the Supreme Court used to determine what constitutes pornography back in the 60’s? “I know it when I see it.” That’s the case here.

I saw it and I know it… Jordan Spieth’s the Player of the Year.

Day’s season is a career year for sure but Spieth’s two majors and his T4 at the Open and second place at The PGA trumps any post season victory charge by Day.

The FedEx Cup events are entertaining and they get plenty of great players on the course after the PGA but they rank nowhere near the majors.

Maybe in a century or two the golf world will recognize them as such but right now a major is a major and nothing comes close.

Spieth’s ’15 season was a rare accomplishment and the way he handled the Grand S;am chase was amazing.

There should only be one name on that ballot. Jordan Spieth…check that box.
