A Quick Pick Six

1. Props to Emiliano Grillo for hanging in there and beating Kevin Na in a playoff for his first win at the Frys.com Open. He’s had eight starts on tour but this was his first event as a full member of the PGA Tour. With his win he gets an invite to The Masters, a two year exemption to the PGA Tour and $1.8 million. Not bad for a 23 year old kid.thompson

2. While the PGA Tour was starting their new 2015-2016 season this week the LPGA who still prefers to keep their season contained within one calendar year was busy crowning one of their superstars in South Korea. Lexi Thompson came from one shot off the lead at the start of the final round to win the LPGA KEB Hana Bank Championship. Thompson shot a 3 under 69 to finish at -15, one shot clear of Yani Tseng and Sung-Hyun Park. It was Thompson’s second win of the season and sixth career victory. She is fast becoming one of the most popular golfers on tour and a threat to win each week. Her bread and butter has been her long drives and punishing iron shots. She still struggles with her putter at times but if she can find a short game she may just be unstoppable.

3. Cheers to Yani Tseng who lately has found the golf game that had made her number one in the world for so long. Tseng was winning tournaments and majors by the bunch in 2010 and 2011 when she earned back to back Player of the Year Awards. But she last won in 2012 as her game surprisingly deserted her. Now, she has finished in the top five in four of her last five tournaments including two seconds. Claude Harmon was brought on board by Tseng and with a Harmon on her team it may not be long before she’s back winning tournaments.

4. Over the weekend Gary Williams had what he called his “career moment.” Williams was fortunate enough to land interviews with the Big Four…and not the millennial version. The classic version. Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino were all together at The Greenbrier Resort where the four of them are collaborating on a new course for Jim Justice. His goal is to build a U.S. Open worthy course and he may have the right team to do it. The four of them won eight U. S. Opens between them. Click here to listen to the Big Four.

5. Is it me or is this non-stop PGA Tour season a bit much. I understand that it is Tim Finchem’s job to give his members a place to play but my, it seems like an off season may give both the players and the fans a chance to recharge and maybe “miss” the tour a bit. October and November used to be the time for the new bloods to have a chance to make their bones on tour and there is still plenty of that but Tim shouldn’t expect any of these tournaments to garner a heck of a lot of attention.

6. No one has more fun traveling the world playing golf than the LPGA’s biggest name, Michelle Wie. The Big Wiesy was at it again this week in South Korea partaking in the local cuisine. How about some live squid? No problem for Michelle.
