It’s been a busy fall in the sports world lately with the NFL in mid-season, the Royals topping the Mets, NBA and NHL seasons underway so it’s easy to lose track of the boys of the PGA Tour. But not this week.
The WGC-HSBC Champions should make a little noise in the sports world as 36 of the top 60 players in the world tee it up in China. The field at the HSBC boasts many of the most accomplished and popular golfers in the world including defending champion Bubba Watson (4), a resurgent and refreshed Rory McIlroy (3), ever popular Rickie Fowler (4) and everyone’s favorite twenty-something Jordan Spieth (2). World number one, Jason Day is the only one of the “New Big 3” missing as he is home waiting the birth of his second child.
It should be fun to watch these golfers go at it and with the time difference we won’t have to worry about any conflict with the NFL. So we can still watch the Giants blow their lead, the Jets quarterback struggles and the Patriots cheat.
One player we won’t have to worry about cheating is America’s Boy Wonder, Jordan Spieth.
Spieth’s blistering rise to the top of the golf world and his modest demeanor have made him the darling of not only the golf world, but the sports world. He continues to “do the right thing” and always says the right thing also.
We can’t talk about Spieth in terms of only his wins and losses but it is how he carries himself under every circumstance. Never a harsh world, never a ‘woe is me’ attitude, never a hint of entitlement.
It’s a drastic contrast to most of the men we see in other sports. He’s the boy you want your daughter to bring home and his mom has given us the inside scoop on why Spieth is the way he is. Unlike athletes that have been coddled from the time someone realizes they are gifted Spieth was never treated special. It was never about him.
“I think the reason that Jordan has stayed so grounded is that when he’s at home, he’s never been ‘the phenomenal Jordan.’ He’s Steven’s and Ellie’s brother, our son. It has never been all about Jordan,” his mother said. “You’re not going to find a lot of golf trophies in our house. We do have his John Deere trophy here because he doesn’t want to fill his house with golf trophies. That’s the place he goes to get away from golf, to just be a regular person.”
“That brings me to the biggest reason I believe Jordan is so grounded. He has a special needs sister. Ellie was born with a neurological disorder and she has always been number one from a needs basis. Neither of our sons craved attention because they both knew that Ellie was the one who needed our attention. It was; it is, the necessity. I can also say that Ellie is both Jordan’s and Steven’s biggest fan. And they may be hers.”
A mom knows best…it was never about him.
But in the world of golf…it’s all about him.
