Blast form the Past: The Bob Hope Desert Classic

The PGA Tour sets up camp this week in the desert at what is now called The CareerBuilder Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation. Wow, that’s a mouthful.

And I always thought the The Bob Hope Desert Classic had a few too many words. To the old timers it has always been just “The Hope.”hope 50

Bob Hope did more to grow this game than anyone playing the tours today. It could be argued that Hope’s contribution to golf is on the same level as Palmer, Nicklaus, Woods.

His enthusiasm for the game made him one of golf’s greatest ambassadors and earned him a place in the World Golf Hall of Fame. Hope has to be the absolute worst golfer in the Hall.

But for Hope it really wasn’t about the score, it was about the friendships that were made and the joy of playing the game.

The Tour can call this tournament what ever it needs to so a sponsor will fork over some endorsement dollars. But to many it’s always The Hope.

And it’s fitting that Bob’s name portrays that special passion he had for the game. He, like all of us were always “hoping” for that special day on the course.

Take a look at some truly memorable moments from Bob and his friends at what I always will call simply, “The Hope.”
