10 Things I Think

1. I watched a lot of golf this week and one of the strangest things I saw was Jordan Spieth’s fill in caddie. His usual bag man, Mike Greller was home nursing a sore ankle. So his agent, Jay Dansi, the guy who signed him up to play Singapore was pressed into service as his caddie. It was hot, humid and the heat index was over 100. A bit of irony surrounded Dansi as he humped that bag around all week. I noticed his stride was a bit shorter and labored come the final round. Greller home on his couch and Dansi sweating it out in Singapore. Payback’s a bitch sometimes.SMBC Singapore Open

2. Spieth has quickly become the face of golf and he has reached “Tiger-Like” status. You just have to watch this kid wherever he is.

3. The Farmers was hyped as must watch golf with Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Jason Day all teeing it up in San Diego. All three are huge draws and drive TV ratings. All three missed the cut…ouch.

4. Phil looked great in round one with a 69 and flops and chip ins galore. Then he ballooned to an ugly 76 on Friday to miss his hometown cut. Ever the optimist Phil says he’s not that far off and loving his new swing fashioned by his new coach, Andrew Getson. That’s Phil…silver lining all the time.

5. The LPGA once again gave us a great tournament at the Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA Classic. Lydia Ko sat this one out but there are so many stars on the LPGA now this may be one of the best “watches” in golf. Golf fans that cruise past the LPGA on TV don’t know what they are missing.

6. There are plenty of guys who can wear the label BPWAM….Best Player Without A Major. Branden Grace may be approaching that status now. His last five European Tour starts: Win, T5, T4, T4 and T8. Oh, and remember he was T4 at the US Open, and third at the PGA Championship last season. He got game.

7. Stacy Lewis made it close at the Pure Silk yesterday and once again finished second, a familiar spot. Since her last win at the ’14 NW Arkansas Championship she has nine second place finishes. That’s driving her crazy.

8. Best news of the weekend: Mark Rolfing texted to Doug Ferguson the news that his recent PET scan showed that rolfinghe is cancer free. “Mucho tears in Houston today. Cancer is 100 percent gone. Miracle.” Such wonderful news for a very beloved man. That’s good stuff.

9. It was strange hearing Dottie Pepper’s voice when we were used to hearing David Feherty on CBS’s broadcast. Feherty has moved to NBC and Pepper won’t try and be Gary McCord’s comedy partner. But Dottie has always been good on both ESPN and NBC. Ironically, the Golf Channel was airing an old Feherty episode as CBS was showing (waiting for) the Farmers.

10. Brandt Snedeker will be hanging around the clubhouse this morning as the rest of the players try and finish their final round at the Farmers. Sned’s got lucky…maybe… and finished his round yesterday. His 69 was amazing considering the elements. The other 23 golfers that finished their rounds averaged 78.1. Wow.

Bonus. Everyone hates a three putt. Well, almost everyone. Kelly Mitchum welcomes three putts. And he’s damn good at them. Check it out.
