Masters Thoughts Day One: Spieth Rules Again

As they say you can’t win The Masters on Thursday but you certainly can lose it. Ernie Els looks like he tried to lose it on his first hole as he six putted for a nine… from 3 feet. It was the most painful thing to watch all day.

Once again Jordan Spieth proves that he’s superhuman. Can we get a DNA test on this kid! So much for “Jordan is off his game.” His bogey free 66 was stellar. Sure his birdies were amazing but it was his scrambling for pars on holes like the 3rd and the 16th that kept his round on pace. Another round like this on Friday and he’s going back to back.

Rickie Fowler bounced back from an opening double bogey on the first with three birdies over his next four holes. Then he lost it with a few bogeys and a horrible snowman on thirteen. He shoots an 80…that’s no way to challenge the new Big 3.

Augusta National looked as brilliant as ever. But the morning wave had it a bit better than the afternoon groupings. The wind was really effecting those that teed off later in the day. Hopefully Friday’s weather will even things out.

With the ESPN coverage not starting to 3:00pm EST I was glued to my laptop and Masters.com. They do it right with two featured groupings simultaneously. I watched every one of Spieth’s 66 shots. Nice!

2016 Masters Round 1

Jason Day was ready to challenge Spieth for best round of the day when he had it to five under par after nine holes. Then he stumbled home and lost four shots from fifteen though seventeen. He finished with an even par 72.

Rory McIlroy was another player that could have threatened Spieth. After a boost from an eagle at thirteen and a birdie at fifteen he was at four under par. But loose shots at sixteen and eighteen cost him two bogeys and he finished at two under 70.

Cheers to amateur Bryson DeChambeau who hung tough with an impressive even par 72.

It’s only day one and with Spieth working his Augusta Magic the rest of the field needs to step on it to keep this from turning into another wire to wire shellacking.
