Cheers to Danny Willett & Jordan Spieth

I don’t know if Jordan Spieth or Danny Willett like to have a drink or two but after watching The Masters today I certainly think they both could use a nice strong one. I know after just watching them I need one.

Willett certainly had reason to celebrate before he even teed off on Thursday. Having just become a dad to a baby boy. Having your first puts you on a cloud for quite awhile. If that isn’t reason enough Willett will be spending his next few days in a sharp looking green jacket as the 2016 Masters Champion.willett spieth jacket

The 28 year old Englishman played the best golf of the day at Augusta and while all those around him sputtered he flourished. His bogey free five under 67 was as clutch a round of golf as anyone could ask for and it gave him his first major victory in his second Masters appearance.

I can’t imagine an Englishman that doesn’t enjoy a pint or two and Willett definitely has a few reasons to knock back a few. Cheers Danny and well done.

While Willett will be partying into the night Spieth will need some time to get over this one. As the front nine wore one he fashioned a five shot lead and it looked like a sweet walk home to Butler Cabin and another green jacket ceremony.

But an uncharacteristic meltdown from one of the most mentally strong players in the game sent Spieth into a tailspin he couldn’t recover from. Bogeys on ten and eleven and then a scene on twelve that could devastate a golfer.

Spieth hit two balls into Rae’s Creek and left there staggered with an astounding quadruple bogey seven. There was no Miracle at The Masters comeback. There simply wasn’t enough golf holes left nor was there much left in Spieth himself. He valiantly birdied thirteen and fifteen but that was all he could muster.spieth slumped

We could see it on the scoreboard and in Spieth himself. He was slump shouldered and head down as he walked in and this was a young man who was gutted.

But true to his nature he did speak to the press but his voice cracked as he struggled to keep it together.

Golf is a hard game and major championships are the toughest. Spieth, like many great major champions gave this one away and while it hurts now this too shall pass.

So maybe Spieth should give himself a break tonight and knock back a few to ease the pain. But he has to take solace in the fact that since the ’15 Masters he has been the story in all the majors, each and everyone of them.

That alone is worth a few cold ones.

Cheers to the Danny, the New Masters Champion and the same to Jordan who has given us all so much to cheer about.
