Sergio Garcia Tops Brooks Koepka in Playoff

With five holes left to play Brooks Koepka looked to have the AT&T Byron Nelson in his pocket. He had a two shot lead and his biggest threat, Jordan Spieth was throwing up on himself all day. sergio trophy att

Other players including Sergio Garcia and Matt Kuchar were making some noise but Koepka had played the last five holes at six under par for the first three rounds. With the par five sixteenth left and his monstrous driver still in the bag he was sure to increase his lead. But, as I like to say that’s why they play the game.

He then proceeds to bogey fourteen and fifteen, the first bogeys over the last six holes on his scorecard all week and promptly opened the door for Garcia.

Garcia, like most of the field wasn’t lighting up the TPC Four Seasons Resort course as he had already hit two balls in the water. But as Koepka backed up to him he was waiting.

His birdie at sixteen got him to fifteen under and tied for the lead and he barely missed another at the last.  Then waited for Koepka to see if he could find a birdie to break the tie.

Koepka had a chance to win with a sixteen foot birdie putt on eighteen but failed to capitalize.

The two went to eighteen for the first playoff hole and it ended quickly. All it took was one swing. Koepka led off and hooked his ball into the water. Advantage Garcia.

When Sergio hit the fairway it was over. Game, set, trophy.

Sergio’s solid par topped Koepka’s disappointing double bogey.

It’s Sergio’s second Nelson win and his ninth PGA Tour win. He last won four years ago at the Wyndam Championship and he now matches his idol, Seve Ballesteros for most PGA Tour wins by a Spaniard.
