U.S. Open Preview: Oakmont Holes 17 & 18

The last two holes at Oakmont Country Club are sure to generate plenty of excitement as players try and close out their rounds but the excitement may be for very different reasons.

The short par 4, 313 yard seventeenth hole will tempt players to drive the green in hopes of staying on or close to the putting surface.  But deep bunkers and punishing rough await any errant tee shots.  More conservative players can hope to hit the fairway with an iron and test their wedge game for a birdie.  This was the sixteenth easiest hole in 2007.

The eighteenth is the polar opposite of the seventeenth.  The last chance for fame and glory at Oakmont is a brute of a par 4 at 484 yards that was the most difficult hole in 2007.  Bunkers and ditches border the fairway as it narrows in the landing area.  The uphill approach to a rectangular green is one of the toughest on the course.  The green is full of undulations that will test golfers on each and every putt.
