Forget the Big 3…We Have The Wild Bunch

All season there has been much written about a new Big 3 in golf. Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy had won plenty of tournaments and in many eyes appeared to separate themselves from the pack.big 3 jjr

Sure, some of it was their victory totals but I think much of it was their “likability” factor. All are young, strong, attractive with interesting backstories. We golfers love our history and after Tiger Woods’ departure from contention we wanted something to hold on to.

What better than a “New Big 3” with the youngsters taking the place of Arnie, Gary and Jack. But, seriously, who could ever challenge Palmer, Player and Nicklaus for anything whether it be on the course ability or off the course popularity. The Big 3 was THE Big 3 and we won’t see their likes again.

What we have here may be better labeled The Wild Bunch. Because the play we have seen in the recent past, especially at the majors, is definitely wild.

Since the 2014 Masters, we have had eight different players win a major. Mcilroy and Spieth earned two and Bubba Watson, Martin Kaymer and Zach Johnson all captured their second major.

And we’ve seen Jason Day, Danny Willett and Dustin Johnson break through for their first majors.

The most exciting golf isn’t limited to just Jason, the top golfer in the world or Jordan (3) or Rory (4). DJ has moved to second in the world and has been on fire recently.

Bubba is fifth and has a win this year. Henrik Stenson (6) won on the European Tour.

Rickie Fowler (7) who was the player who many thought should make the threesome a foursome has four world wide wins the past two years. the-wild-bunch

Adam Scott (8) has two PGA Tour wins in 2016. Willett (9) has a green jacket and number ten, Branden Grace has a PGA Tour win and a habit of hanging around in majors.

Heck there are dozens of players that can win each and every week and that puts golf in a much better place than having one dominant winner like Tiger was for a decade. Or for that matter a group of three, whether big or not.

Hey, I’ll be honest…it’s always thrilling when Day, Spieth or McIlroy are in the mix but with so many good golfers playing so well we are seeing a broad range of winners and for my money that’s a good thing. A real good thing.

So until Jason, Jordan and Rory get a monopoly on the majors (like Arnie, Jack and Gary did for awhile) let’s hold off on the Big 3 and have fun watching this Wild Bunch.
