Youngsters Take Center Stage at the U.S. Women’s Open

While the PGA Tour takes a very unusual but understandable week off due to the flooding in West Virginia, the best women in golf will have center stage as they vie for their toughest major of the year, the U.S. Women’s Open.

The USGA has gathered the best female golfers in the world at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, Calif. Unlike the male version of this Open which makes regular stops in Cali this is the first time since 1982 that the Women’s Open has been played in California and only the third time in its 71 year history.ko ana trophy

The ladies game is in great shape right now as the youth movement in golf isn’t just reserved for the men. The ladies have their own class of youngsters led by world number one Lydia Ko.

At 19 she has the resume of a player twice her age: 13 LPGA Tour wins, including two majors and five world wide wins. She has broken just about every record having to do with age and has set the ladies game on its ear. If a male had done what she has at such a young age he’d be a household name.

Third in the ranking is Inbee Park who at 27 could classify as a senior citizen. Park has been injured most of the season with a thumb injury and had to withdraw from the Open.

Fourth in the world ranking is the long hitting Lexi Thompson. At 21 she has seven LPGA wins including one this season and she broke through for a major win at the ’14 Kraft.lexi kraft

At 23 Sei Young Kim may seem like an old veteran to those youngsters but she can golf her ball. She’s claimed two wins already this season and three in 2015. She could break though for her first major here.

And what about Ariya Jutanugarn who strung together three consecutive wins in May? She’s only 21.

And of course there are many familiar names that could threaten for this title but this may just be a crowning achievement for one of these kids who have taken the ladies game to new heights this season.
