Olympics 2016: Another One Bites the Dust

The U.S. Olympic Golf Team took another hit as Dustin Johnson announced he would not be heading to Rio.  Johnson cited the Zika Virus as the main reason for declining to compete in golf’s re-entry into the Olympics.  The last time golf was in the Olympics was 1904.dj smile trophy

“This was not an easy decision for me,” Johnson said in a statement. “But my concerns about the Zika virus cannot be ignored.”

“I feel it would be irresponsible to put myself, her or our family at risk.  I believe I am making the right decision for me and, most importantly, my family. While I am sure some will be critical of my decision, my hope is that most will understand and support it.”

This is a big hit to the U.S. Team and the Olympics in general.  Johnson, the second ranked player in the world and probably the hottest golfer on the planet, joins top ranked Jason Day and fourth ranked Rory McIlroy along with several others players who have also declined to play. So much for showcasing the best players in the world at Rio.

With Johnson’s defections Patrick Reed slides into his spot on the team joining, at this point in the standings, Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler on Team USA.
