Bubba Watson’s Almost Ryder Cup Cover

They say timing is everything. And sometimes they, whoever they are…are right.

But for the good folks at Golf Magazine timing didn’t quite work out this month.

I pulled my issue from the mailbox and gazed down upon their Ryder Cup Preview Issue. There is nothing like the Ryder Cup and I am sure they spent many hours putting this issue together. But even the best laid plans of editors and reporters often go awry.bubba-golf-mag

Front and center on the cover is Bubba Watson with the headline Bubba His Time Is Now…and So Is Yours. 57 Ways to Go Low and Win Every Match. Included is another line, Bubba Watson looks to help Team USA reclaim the Ryder Cup. Oops.

Unfortunately for the editors at Golf Magazine they shanked it. Captain Davis Love III has yet to name Bubba to the team. He has passed over the seventh ranked player in the world to pick Rickie Fowler (9), Matt Kuchar (17) and J.B Holmes (21) as his Captain’s Picks.

Love still has one pick remaining to use after the Tour Championship but it looks as if the Bubba Ship has sailed. Even if he forced Love’s hand with a win at the Tour Championship it looks like Bubba may be watching the happenings at Hazeltine from his couch.

Bubba hasn’t been hot lately but he does have a win this year at the Northern Trust Open and he is the seventh ranked player in the world! But Love and his task force may have had enough Bubba’s act.

Love says, “I’ve been saying all along, we’re a sports team and we have to draft the right player for the right position. There’s going to be a lot of stats and a lot of things to look at, but making our pairings, fitting in with the team, doing all the little things that you asked to do. These three guys filled incredible roles, a lot of different roles.(These captain’s picks) added a lot statistically, emotionally, leadership, for a lot of reasons, and so the next guy is going to have to step up and fill a role as well.”

Hmmm, doesn’t sound like there’s a place for a whining, self-centered, high strung basket case with ADD on the team. Ouch.

Or maybe it’s just his Ryder Cup record. He’s 3-8 overall and 0-3 in Singles. But then again not too many Americans have glowing Ryder Cup records.

I give Love credit if he feels that Bubba may not be a good fit but this is a tough call, he just missed making the team on points and was next in line after the top eight guaranteed spots.

If Love was going to pick him he had his chance. It looks like Bubba’s Ryder Cup is a no go.

Too bad for the guys at Golf Magazine.
