Chip Shots from My Couch

It’s official: I’ve played my last round of 2016.  Freezing temps have closed all the courses in the Hudson Valley and as I am writing this snow is falling outside.  But that didn’t stop me from walking a few holes today.

Instead of a boring walk through the neighborhood I headed up to James Baird State Park, an old Robert Trent Jones design and choose to walk a few holes (without clubs) to get myself off the couch and maybe imagine a few lovely golf shots.  It worked, I played all three holes in one under par, in my mind of course.bing-co

Cheers to Double D…David Duval and his step son Nick Karavites for teaming up to win the PNC Father Son Challenge.  It was great to see Duval back on the course and Nick played very well.  You could see on DD’s face how much it meant to him.

Props to Harris English and Matt Kuchar for hanging on to win the Franklin Templeton Shootout by a shot over Jerry Kelly and Steve Stricker.  In the team format Kuch & English carded a 15 under 57 in the first round only to be outdone by Kelly & Strick with a 56.  That’s good shooting, I don’t care what the format or the setup is.

Lydia Ko announced she is parting ways with her coach, David Leadbetter.  Ko’s not the first to move on from a coach and Leadbetter has seen plenty of players move on but…. this is a player who got to number one in the world under his tutelage.   She earned 15 wins and two majors with Leadbetter and he joins her caddie as another casulty from team Ko who she dumped earlier this year.

Randall Mell has an insightful piece with quotes from Leadbetter who says that her parents may be calling all the shots.

Take a minute to read an excerpt from Nathan Crosby’s book  18 Holes With Bing: Golf, Life, and Lessons From Dad.  Bing Crosby was more than a star-he was a super-superstar.  In his day he was bigger than Elvis and bigger that the Beatles but he always remained a regular, generous man.  “Everything Dad accomplished in the entertainment field was a distant second to this game that animated him more than anything else. As my mother, Kathryn, so aptly described many years ago, Bing Crosby was a golfer who sang.”

Nathan gives us an interesting and poingtant look at his dad who would rather golf that do just about anything.

No matter what Jack Nicklaus does he can’t stop me from my man-crush.  I love Jack and his numbers but more for the way he lived his life.  But, I tried to look away when he endorsed Donald Trump for president.  That was painful.  And now he announced that he’ll attend his inauguration.  I guess Jack is like most Americans, we vote with our wallet.  And Trump has made Jack plenty of money.  The one percenters stick together.

  1. Great points of interest here. I agree — my mancrush for Jack Nicklaus will forever remain the same despite the fact that he openly endorses the president elect. See you January Jack!
