Secret Balls at the U.S. Open

serena-5

I’ve turned into a tennis junkie this week and have been addicted to the great play at the U.S. Open.  It’s been fun watching Serena, Caroline, Novak and crew smash that yellow ball around. As ESPN makes a habit of showing the players coaches during the matches I was intrigued by a shot of Andy Murray’s coach, the great Ivan Lendl who watches each match with a face that borders on boredom. I noticed his hat and jacket were carrying… Continue Reading

Lots of Squeaky Chalk at Baltusrol

pga balt

The two leading drivers of the ball in the game today both got off to unexpectedly sloppy starts in the 98th PGA today in Springfield at Baltusrol’s venerable Lower Course. Playing with an early tee time in the best wind free weather of the day, Rory McIlroy could not take advantage of either the benign conditions or his prodigious talents. McIlroy didn’t hole one birdie putt today and totaled 35 putts for the round. At +4 he is nine back… Continue Reading

Phil Mickelson + Stephen Hawking = U.S. Open Win

phil thumbs up

One of the ongoing themes the players have been repeating this week is that Oakmont will be the toughest, most difficult U.S. Open ever. Put Phil Mickelson down as one of those players. “It’s one of the most difficult golf courses I think we’ll ever play. I think that it is a very strategic course that you’ll have to put the ball in the right, correct spots, and if you don’t, kind of accept the fact you’ll make a bogey… Continue Reading

William McGirt turned pro in 2004 and after years of playing mini-tour after mini-tour and then the Web.com Tour for a bit he finally made it to the big show, the PGA Tour in 2011. He’s 36 and kept at it a long time when others would have thrown in the towel. Coming into The Memorial he had played in played in 164 events with just 14 top tens and no wins. The PLAYERS: A “Major” Debate

players flag

The PLAYERS Championship starts today and if the finish can compare to last year’s Rickie Fowler coming out party we are in for a treat. But the debate still rages: Is The PLAYERS the fifth major? The PGA Tour’s marquee event has struggled to be held in major championship status to the consternation of Commissioner Tim Finchem. He has tried everything he could. The PLAYERS has the biggest purse in all of golf, $10.5 million with a cool $1.89 mil… Continue Reading

Spieth’s Defeat More Mental Than Physical

spieth masters hat

Jordan Spieth may still be feeling the pain today from his final round disaster at The Masters. When you’re an elite golfer with his resolute mindset and you don’t preform it can sting for awhile. But he’ll be doing himself an great injustice if he continues to beat himself up for more that a day or two. Golf is hard. Tournament golf is harder. Major Championship golf is the hardest of all. And if he can remember back before the… Continue Reading

Danny Willett’s Surreal Trip to Winning The Masters

willett conference

So many times we hear that one of golf’s compelling attributes is that it mimics life. You’ll have ups and downs, joy and sorrow on the course just as we do in life. Many times all that will occur in a matter of minutes or moments. There are plenty of times in life when just showing up and being in the right place at the right time was the simple formula for success. And sometimes fate steps in and takes… Continue Reading

Cheers to Danny Willett & Jordan Spieth

willett spieth jacket

I don’t know if Jordan Spieth or Danny Willett like to have a drink or two but after watching The Masters today I certainly think they both could use a nice strong one. I know after just watching them I need one. Willett certainly had reason to celebrate before he even teed off on Thursday. Having just become a dad to a baby boy. Having your first puts you on a cloud for quite awhile. If that isn’t reason enough… Continue Reading

Another Tough Day at The Masters

spieth 16 masters

A funny thing happened on the way to that mano y mano matchup at The Masters between Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy, a U.S. Open broke out. Augusta National played so very tough again today with gusty winds and firm greens players were shaking their heads all day as they missed fairways, greens and plenty of putts.  Only five players broke par today: Smylie Kaufman (69) who is in second place, Bernhard Langer (70), third place, Jason Day (71) T5,… Continue Reading

A Brutal Day at The Masters…Spieth Hangs On

Apr 8, 2016; Augusta, GA, USA; Jordan Spieth hits his tee shot on the 7th hole during the second round of the 2016 The Masters golf tournament at Augusta National Golf Club. Mandatory Credit: Rob Schumacher-USA TODAY Sports

So much for the walk-away Masters win for Jordan Spieth. Spieth called Augusta National “U.S. Opens conditions” today and the results certainly backed him up. Only four players were able to finish under par today and Spieth wasn’t one of them. Spieth’s two over 74 was just enough to keep him in the lead. It was brutally tough at Augusta National but Spieth’s round started out anything but. With birdies at the first and third he had it to eight… Continue Reading
