Phil Mickelson: Tournament Ambassador

phil career builder

The PGA Tour heads to the desert for the CareerBuilder Challenge and what formerly was called The Bob Hope Classic. Hope was the driving force behind his tournament for over fifty years. Hope was instrumental in building the tournament into a ‘must-play’ on tour as he brought his fellow celebrities, from the Rat Pack to sitting U.S. Presidents to play the game he so loved. He raised millions for charities and after his passing the torch was passed to former… Continue Reading

A New Attitude Pays Off for Pat Perez

perez-fist

Pat Perez is back in the winner’s circle as he successfully completed a comeback from surgery with a win at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba. Perez was absent from the PGA Tour for eight months due to shoulder surgery and he must admit that his surgery was extremely successful. This is his second PGA Tour win in over fourteen years on tour. He last won in 2009 at the Bob Hope Classic. During his downtime for rehabilitation Perez had time… Continue Reading

10 Things I Think

maj haw swing

1.  The story surrounding Robert Allenby continues to change daily. This we know: he wasn’t kidnapped, he was missing credit cards, and he was found on the street either drugged or drunk a block from a strip club. Connect the dots. 2.  Allenby will hold a press conference Tuesday in Phoenix. Maybe he’ll take some of the focus off Bill Belichick. 3.  Bill Haas has grown up. My brother and I were reminiscing about watching him as a skinny kid… Continue Reading

David Duval, Still Searching

by Jeff Skinner Rory McIlroy is back atop the Official World Golf Rankings and if he is as mature as we would like to think he may want to take some time to appreciate where he stands in this game.  Fame and fortune follow those that climb to the top spot.  But it can disappear as quickly as it came.  Just ask David Duval. Duval is a former world number one who has seen the view from the top but… Continue Reading

Bill Clinton Rocks the Humana Challenge

by Jeff Skinner By any measure the newly reconfigured Human Challenge in Partnership with the Clinton Foundation has to be considered a success.  President Clinton’s presence and influence have set the former Bob Hope Classic on a successful path to recovery. Mark Wilson may have carted home the hardware and the million dollar check but the star of the show was President Clinton.  Much like it had been during its heyday as The Hope the star was never the players. … Continue Reading

The Humana Has Phil, Norman & Clinton But No Hope

by Jeff Skinner It’s that time again, that time when the PGA Tour moves to the mainland and all of those fans whose clubs have been replaced with snow shovels check the calendar to see when it will be our turn to tee it up. The Southern Californian desert plays host the newly configured Humana Challenge in Partnership with the Clinton Foundation.  That’s a heck of a mouthful for a tournament that used to be called simply “The Hope.”  With… Continue Reading

A Quick 9…

by Jeff Skinner David Toms must have been in a hurry to get his final round at Kapalua out of the way so he could catch all the pre-game for his beloved LSU Tigers against Alabama.  Toms made it around the Plantation Course, by himself in two hours and thirty one minutes.  Too bad his Tigers were rolled over by the Crimson Tide. On the contrary, the Jonathan Byrd/Steve Stricker pairing seemed to be taking forever to move over the… Continue Reading

Looking for Mr.58 in 2012

by Jeff Skinner As the PGA Tour season gets back in action at The Tournament of Champions there are plenty of prognosticators out there with predictions for the 2012 season.  We all do it. From all the analysts on The Golf Channel to every golf writer to the bloggers, we all like to “guess” what will happen this season.  Who will be the man this year?  Will Tiger win, and will he win a major?  Is it time for Westwood… Continue Reading

The Bob Hope Classic: Thanks for the Memories

by Jeff Skinner Thanks for the memories.  That was Bob Hope’s theme song and it couldn’t be more apropos now.  The Bob Hope Classic which started in 1960 is no more.  Tournament organizers announced that it will be renamed the Humana Challenge after its new sponsor. “The Hope” had fallen on difficult times in past years and it was struggling to stay afloat.  With the new Humana deal there will be golf in the desert for the next eight years… Continue Reading

PGA Tour 2011: So Far So Good

by Jeff Skinner With the first two months of the PGA Tour season in the books it’s time to take a look back at the best memories from the West Coast Swing.  I’ll take three great memories from the opening portion of the PGA Tour. At the Bob Hope Classic we saw the birth of a new phenomenon on tour, Johnny Vegas.  Whether you call him Jhonattan, Johnny or Johnny Vegas (spelling doesn’t matter) he was the best story on… Continue Reading
