A Great Holiday Tradition: Prime Time Golf from Hawaii

kapalua18

The past few weeks have been full of family, food and fun as our holiday traditions started in mid December and spread right through to early January. It has been great and another of our traditions takes center stage this week: prime time golf from Hawaii. Oh, how I have come to treasure the PGA Tour’s early start in paradise at the SBS Tournament of Champions. It’s just the fix needed for a golf starved, house bound fanatic. I am… Continue Reading

Olympics 2016: Another One Bites the Dust

rio golf

The U.S. Olympic Golf Team took another hit as Dustin Johnson announced he would not be heading to Rio.  Johnson cited the Zika Virus as the main reason for declining to compete in golf’s re-entry into the Olympics.  The last time golf was in the Olympics was 1904. “This was not an easy decision for me,” Johnson said in a statement. “But my concerns about the Zika virus cannot be ignored.” “I feel it would be irresponsible to put myself,… Continue Reading

Jason Day Goes Wire to Wire at Arnie’s Place

day arnie place

Jason Day just did his part in making this 2016 PGA Tour season even more exciting. After taking three months off from golf to spend time with his family and newborn daughter Day’s game wasn’t as sharp as when we saw him at the end of 2015 when he won five times including the PGA Championship. He’ll tell you he didn’t have his A game today but what he did have was just enough to stay ahead of a trio… Continue Reading

10 Things I Think & More

scott honda trophy

1. It goes to show you…you never know in this game. While all of us are crowning the twenty-somethings as the new Big 3 Adam Scott comes through and shows us what a 35 year old can do on a tough course. On Saturday with a quadruple bogey on fifteen he looked to have lost his chance. But a determined attitude and a new confidence with his putter allowed him to fight back and win for the first time since… Continue Reading

Bubba Watson Wins 2nd Northern Trust Open

bubba nto

Bubba Watson says he’s “not big on change” and we have heard Bubba whine a bit over the years about courses and course changes he didn’t like.  He usually talks himself out of competing on those courses but good old Riviera Country Club hasn’t changed much over the years.  And that suits Bubba just fine. There were plenty of doubters with Bubba taking a one shot lead into the final round.  Bubba hadn’t fared too well with 54 hole leads… Continue Reading

Ramblings from the Easy Chair: PGA Day 1

dj pga d1

Our Links Life Golf boss, Big Skins, reminds us  all that this week’s PGA is ” the last shot for fame and glory” for 156 professional golfers in 2015. No argument from me on that point but from another perspective this week’s tromp along the dunes in Kohler, Wisconsin lays out like a long running soap opera with multiple story lines all converging in a dramatic climax. Below are  listed just a sampling of the many narratives waiting for their final… Continue Reading

Bubba Watson Wins in Playoff

watson trophy

Bubba Watson birdied the second playoff hole at The Travelers Championship to defeat Paul Casey and win for the second time this season. This is Watson’s second Travelers Championship and eighth PGA Tour win. “I proved to myself in ’10 that I could win under pressure in the playoff; I proved to myself that I could mess up 17 and still have a chance to win, and so I knew that if I just kept my head down and kept… Continue Reading

Chambers Bay and a “New” U.S. Open

2015 U.S. Open Preview Day

Normally, controversy about the U.S. Open usually happens during the week of the championship. Traditionally players will complain about the length of the rough, the speed of the greens and maybe the conversion of a par five into a par four. But this year things are different. With four weeks before play starts the sniping at the USGA has begun. Or should I say the sniping at Executive Director Mike Davis has begun. Last month Davis stated that Chambers Bay… Continue Reading

Expert Picks: And The Winner Is…

Masters Ball 2

The totals are in and our yearly foray into the world of prognostication has paid off for one lucky Links Life Golfer…namely me. In a very close race at The Masters, I was able to finish with a slight lead over The Greek. We both had Spieth, Rory and Bubba but I opted for Day while The Greek took Walker. That was the difference.  The final standings: Big Skins 384 points The Greek 378 points Lil Skins 350.5 points Big… Continue Reading
