Dustin Johnson Ties Leo Diegel

dj toc18

When Dustin Johnson feathered a feel wedge from 85 years to within 3 feet on the 3rd hole at Kapalua Sunday it seemed to me the tournament was all but over. His converted birdie gave him a four stroke lead which isn’t insurmountable on this Tour (especially when you think back to DJ’s last start where he squandered a six stroke lead in the final round). But today it just looked like he was going to run away and hide… Continue Reading

Jimmy Walker Holds Off Jason Day at PGA Championship

walker trophy

Jimmy Walker continued the 2016 trend of first time major winners at the PGA Championship today with his one shot victory over defending champ Jason Day. Danny Willett started the season with his Masters win and Dustin Johnson captured the U.S. Open for his first major. Just two weeks ago Henrik Stenson dazzled at the Open Championship and today Walker made it a quartet of first time major winners. The last time we saw all four majors go to first… Continue Reading

10 Things I Think & More….Open Championship Style

open 145th

1. The Open not only gave us a new major champion in Henrik Stenson but also a new cult hero. Andrew “Beef” Johnston with his furry, wild looking beard, healthy appetite and likable personality was also a winner at Royal Troon. The fans and the media loved him. He was just fun to watch. 2. The par three Postage Stamp doesn’t need anymore publicity, it’s a legendary hole. And watching the best golfers in the world need all their skills… Continue Reading

The Other Tournament at Troon

open 145th

Philly Mick and Hammering Hank teed off today in a defacto match play scenario, winner takes all, for the Claret Jug, the Gold Medal and the appellation “ Champion Golfer of the Year”. None of the other  seventy nine golfers playing the links at Royal Troon today had a reasonable chance to win this championship so we had, in effect a tournament within the championship. Either Phil on Henrik would be crowned king of the golfing world, for this week… Continue Reading

Henrik Stenson, Champion Golfer of the Year

henril trophy sit

This image says it all.  Henrik Stenson shoots a record tying 63 to tie Johnny Miller for a final round in a major to win the OPEN Championship.  His 264 is the lowest in OPEN Championship history.  And in OPEN Championship fashion he’s wished a “Well Done and See You At Royal Birkdale”.  No one does it like the OPEN Championship. Stenson’s scorecard show 10 birdies, TEN BIRDIES.  Offset by two bogeys his 63 puts him in the rarest of… Continue Reading

The Senior Set Does Troon

open logo blue

Of the 156 competitors at Royal Troon nine are over 50 and eligible for play on The Champions Tour.  Vijay Singh and Miguel Angel Jimenez are the only two players from the geriatric set who regularly compete on the primary tours that cater to young flat bellies. But the lure of a major and the many, many ways that the R&A makes entry into the OPEN accessible typically brings in a bunch of gents who, to put it politely, are… Continue Reading

It’s Open Championship week and the oldest and most intriguing of the majors wouldn’t be complete without the Links Life Golf Crew Open Championship Picks. The Open Championship…The Best Major of Them All?

open logo blue

I am a prisoner of the moment when it comes to major championship golf. The week of each major I can think of many reasons why that major is the best one. This week is no different. And Gary Van Sickle of Golf.com thinks the same way in his piece “10 Reasons the Open is the Best Major of Them All.” I cannot disagree with number one: The Open Championship is golf’s greatest event because it’s the oldest and has… Continue Reading

Mickelson Poised to Crash Pebble Beach Party

phil pebble 16 driver

All the talk heading into the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am was about Jordan Spieth and Jason Day being back on the course together. Jordan and Jason were the headliners and with six of the top ten golfers in the world teeing it up on Pebble it was going to be a battle of the “new generation.” Bubba Watson, Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed are the top ten golfers that were supposed to be the big draw along with… Continue Reading

Historic Win in LLG Open Championship Contest

claret-jug3

As Zach Johnson basks in the glow of his Open Championship victory it’s time to celebrate another winner who certainly shares Zach’s enthusiasm for golf on the Old Course. In another close finish in the Links Life Golf Pick a Winner contest G. Rennie finally broke through for his first win in 2015.  Rennie rode his favorite, Louie Oosthuizen and Grand Slam hopeful, Jordan Spieth to a win over a field of LLG hackers. In doing so he made a… Continue Reading
