Hurley

Every time a player on the PGA Tour wins for the first time it is a special day.  For Billy Hurley III today was really, really special. This win at the Quicken Loans National took place in his backyard, having grown up just thirty some miles away.  Playing at Congressional just outside of Washington D.C. and a short ride to Hurley’s college home, The Naval Academy he had tons of local support from friends and fans hoping to honor their… Continue Reading

Best U.S. Open Venue? Two Perspectives

us open 18 flag

The boys at Golf Digest are heavily into the U.S. Open and as such have come up with a list they call “The Best U.S. Open Venues… Factoring in course layout, tradition, past winner and excitement produced, our panel provides a ‘definitive’ ranking.” They only include courses that held an Open for the past ten years so that disqualified a few favorites like Baltusrol and Oakland Hills but it’s still a heavy hitting list. Without blinking I knew Pebble Beach… Continue Reading

Jack Nicklaus Receives Gold Medal…Hit the Fast Foward

jack gold podium

In case you have a life and were not able to watch Jack Nicklaus receive the Congressional Gold Medal yesterday here is the entire ceremony. I, who have no life right now due to rehab from shoulder surgery and snow covered courses sat and watched the live stream. It was almost unbearable listening to gas bag after gas bag read from notes prepared by their staff that probably got the same stories from Wikipedia. I’ll save you some time, fast… Continue Reading

Rory McIlroy Starts 2015 as “The Man”

rory tiger fade

The start of the golf season has become so blurred here in the states. With the PGA Tour instituting its wraparound season their season starts in November. Traditionally the 2015 season started with the calendar in January at the Tournament of Champions. For years we’ve heard “the season starts with The Masters.” Oh it’s so very confusing. But to me the season starts when the big boys come out and play. And make no mistake; Rory McIlroy is golf’s “big… Continue Reading

Great Stuff at The Open Championship

by Jeff Skinner As it should The Open Championship dominated the golf pages, both electronic and print around the world with so many wonderful pieces by numerous scribes. Here are some great reads. Take some time to check them out. In Doug Ferguson’s game story he says Rory and his game are back in a big way:  In another major lacking tension over the final hour, what brought The Open to life was the potential of its champion. After nearly… Continue Reading

It’s Déjà vu All Over Again at The Open Championship

by Jeff Skinner Rory McIlroy’s back to back 66’s have given him a four stroke lead over Dustin Johnson at The Open Championship and positioned him well in his chase for his third major championship. If you think you have seen this act before you’re right.  At Congressional in 2011 Rory had a six stroke lead at the end of the third round. He went on to win his first major championship by eight strokes. At the Ocean Course on… Continue Reading

by Jeff Skinner Justin Rose continued his hot streak today as he walked away from the field at the Scottish Open. His final round 65 was bogey and stress free Rose and it gave him victories in consecutive starts as the last time he teed it up he won at Congressional at the Quicken Loans National. His final round kept him two clear of Kristoffer Bronberg, moved him to number three in the world and should make him one of… Continue Reading

by Jeff Skinner Believe it or not, Justin Rose was born in South Africa.   We know him as an Englishman as he did grow up in England but now he lives in Florida. But I think he may like to summer in the Mid-Atlantic section of the United States. Last year in Philadelphia he was the last man staining at the U.S. Open when he topped the field at a brutal Merion. This week just down I-95 a bit… Continue Reading

Martin Kaymer’s Sets Record at U.S. Open

by Jeff Skinner Martin Kaymer ruled the day at Pinehurst No. 2 today. His five under par 65 matched the new U.S. Open record at Pinehurst which he set yesterday. His 36 hole total of 130 broke Rory McIlroy’s Congressional record of 131 set in 2011. With golfers still on the course but no one making a huge move, Kaymer looks to be heading to dinner with a healthy lead. He sits at -10 with Brendon Todd six back at… Continue Reading
