Ten Things I Think…Ryder Cup Style

ryder-16

1. After the USA Ryder Cup Team closed out their victory Davis Love III joked that all he did was “write some names down and drive a cart around.” But he was there as captain for a reason. The Task Force, including Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk who were on that losing team in 2012 felt they failed their captain and he deserved another shot. He got it and he did exactly the same thing he did in… Continue Reading

Ryder Cup Pressure Starts Early Sunday

ryder-16

We can expect plenty of early fireworks on Sunday at the Ryder Cup as both captains have front loaded their lineups. With his team trailing 9 ½ to 6 ½ European Captain Darren Clarke hopes to jump-start a comeback with his star players leading off the Sunday Singles. The last time Davis Love III captained the USA at Medinah in 2012 they surrendered a four point lead to the Euros in a crushing defeat. Love hopes he has countered Clarke’s… Continue Reading

Love Stands Pat, Clarke Mixes It Up for Saturday

rory-fist-16

The two Ryder Cup captains are both tasked with a difficult challenge to keep their team’s winning hopes alive. There are still twenty points to be earned over the weekend and Davis Love III and Darren Clarke have to find the right combination of pairings on this all important Saturday. Love is dealing from a position of strength with a two point lead and looks to be putting out what he thinks are his hot hands and stud pairings. He… Continue Reading

Wow! USA Sweeps Morning Session

ryder-16

No one but the most ardent and intoxicated US fan ever imagined a clean sweep of all four foursomes matches. Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed led from the start and bettered the powerhouse Euro team of Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson 3 & 2. Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler battled back from 2 down deficits, twice, to pull out a 1 up win over Rory McIlroy and Andy Sullivan. Jimmy Walker and Zach Johnson blitzed Martin Kaymer and Sergio Garcia… Continue Reading

At This Ryder Cup….Let the Players Play

ryder-16

The Ryder Cup was started by Samuel Ryder, a wealthy seed merchant with hopes of an exhibition that promoted the game of golf and the sportsmanship and camaraderie that goes along with it. I don’t think he would recognize it today. Since 1979 when all of Europe was added to the original Great Britain & Ireland Team the matches became competitive but the buildup and pressure surrounding the Ryder Cup has gone over the top. With the passing of Arnold… Continue Reading

Westwood Starts Ryder Cup Smack Talk

westy-ryder-cup-fist

The Ryder Cup Smack Talk has started already. European Tour stalwart Lee Westwood who will be making his tenth consecutive team has taken a page from the Seve Book of gamesmanship. Westwood is quoted as saying that Tiger Woods may be a distraction for the American Team. “I don’t know what impact there will be from having Tiger around. They have always struggled to find a partner for Tiger that’s been successful. He could have an adverse effect in the… Continue Reading

Can Dustin Johnson Win His Major this Year?

Dustin Johnson

As we inch closer to the next major the boys of the PGA Tour are busy getting a look at Chambers Bay and honing their game at this week’s Memorial Tournament. One of the favorites at the U.S. Open, and this and every other week on tour is Dustin Johnson. DJ has a game that can win anywhere and on occasion he does. But he still remains one of those at the top of the list of the best players… Continue Reading

Ten Things I Think

rory irish open

1.  Is it me or is there something very strange about The Duty Free Dubai Irish Open? Dubai Irish Open…hmm. I know that the European Tour gets millions from Dubai and it is their largest sponsor but that just sounds so strange. 2.  With all due respect to Soren Kjeldsen I feel a bit sorry for those hearty golf fans who braved the difficult weather at Royal County Down to be left with a playoff between Bernd Wiesberger, Eddie Pepperell… Continue Reading

Euro’s Tap Darren Clarke as Captain

darren 16

We spent yesterday talking Ryder Cup and the “non-announcement” of Davis Love III being named the American Captain. The PGA wouldn’t officially comment and Love diplomatically wouldn’t confirm Tim Rosaforte’s report. If Rosaforte reports it then we know it’s accurate. But on the other side of the pond there was no such uncertainty: Darren Clarke was officially named the 2016 European Team Ryder Cup Captain. Clarke beat out Miguel Angel Jimenez and will lead the Euro’s as they defend at… Continue Reading
