Longer Than the Pro V1… & Cheaper

kirkland-vs-prov

I am as susceptible to the hype about the latest and greatest golf gear as the next hacker.  But the one constant in the world of golf is the Titleist Pro V1 ball.  Yes, you know the deal…all the pros use them, the best ball in golf and of course the longest, blah, blah, blah.  Or is it? The Pro V1’s are great but plunking down close to 50 bucks for a dozen goes against my thrifty Scottish nature. But… Continue Reading

A Miracle Kid & Rory McIlroy

oklahoma-all-stars-traden-karch

Our world, especially our sports world is filled with entitled, self absorbed mooks who will never realize that the world isn’t just about them.  The news is filled with them each and everyday. Rory McIlroy isn’t one of them.  Rory gets it. Rory isn’t that far removed from being a kid and idolizing his golf heroes just like his friend Traden Karch. Traden is still just a kid who had Rory as his hero as he played golf for his… Continue Reading

Saturday Swing Tip: Smash It Like Justin Thomas

thomas-driver

Justin Thomas has made a big splash on the PGA Tour with his booming drives and his Spring Break Trips with Jordan Spieth, Smylie Kaufman and Rickie Fowler. He crushes the ball with his driver and here he offers a tip on how to get the most out of the big dawg. Ben An Wins Long Drive with a Ball That Just Goes Too Far

pga balt

One of the fun things at the PGA Championship is their decision to reinstate the Long Driving Competition. They had done it for years before doing away with it but since 2014 we’ve seen some massive belts. Probably the most famous of its past winners has to be the Golden Bear himself. Way back in 1963 a young Jack Nicklaus smacked one 341 yards…with a persimmon clubhead. Who knows what he could have done with one of those high tech… Continue Reading

Open Championship Preview: Holes 16, 17, 18

open 145th

The last three holes at Royal Troon starts with a birdie opportunity at the par 5, 554 yard sixteenth hole.  In 2004 it played as the easiest hole on the course. A burn crosses the fairway and will challenge golfers to clear it with any wind at all.  The large green is surrounded by those deep, painful bunkers. The par 3 seventeenth normally faces into the wind and at 220 yards players may need a driver to have any chance… Continue Reading

Dustin Johnson’s Season Gets Better and Better

dj wgc

Do you think Dustin Johnson has got his stuff together? Long a whipping boy for not winning enough, (really not winning majors) was the knock on the consensus best athlete on tour. But his past two performances should have been enough to banish that tag. DJ’s last four starts: 3rd at The Memorial, 5th at St. Jude’s, a breakthrough win at the U.S. Open and another WGC with his win today at the Bridgestone Invitational. And DJ seems more laid… Continue Reading

Day Leads PLAYERS after Record Tying 63

day players 16

The PLAYERS Championship opened just as one would expect…sort of. If you put the best golfer in the world on a firm fast course with soft greens and only a slight breeze he’s going to go low. But a 63…amazing. Jason Day played up to his ranking as the top golfer in the world and scorched TPC Sawgrass with a course record tying round that had him in the lead by two strokes on a day that let dozens of… Continue Reading

Just about the same time Golf Magazine, the printed version, was hitting our mailboxes Michelle Wie was teeing it up at the LPGA’s Kingsmill Championship. Rory McIlroy: One Satisfied Golfer

by Jeff Skinner Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia have been spending a lot of time together lately. Before teeing off together in the final round of the WGC Bridgestone Invitational we last saw them together as Rory held the Claret Jug aloft with Sergio, who finished tied for second, looking on. That was at the Open Championship where Rory put on a magnificent display and topped Sergio and Rickie Fowler. Unfortunately for Sergio his Sunday at Firestone ended the same… Continue Reading
