The Senior Set Does Troon

open logo blue

Of the 156 competitors at Royal Troon nine are over 50 and eligible for play on The Champions Tour.  Vijay Singh and Miguel Angel Jimenez are the only two players from the geriatric set who regularly compete on the primary tours that cater to young flat bellies. But the lure of a major and the many, many ways that the R&A makes entry into the OPEN accessible typically brings in a bunch of gents who, to put it politely, are… Continue Reading

The Postage Stamp: Short & Fierce

open 145th

Royal Troon oozes history as most Open Championship courses do. I mean heck, they have been playing golf there for 140 years and this is the ninth Open Championship to be played there. By far the most famous of the holes is the short par 3 eighth hole: The Postage Stamp. Christopher Clarey of the New York Times gives us some history and a locals view of the best little hole in the Rota. Short holes have done some major… Continue Reading

Ernie Els: Not Always Easy for “The Big Easy”

esl 94

Ernie Els has had an amazing career. The four time major winner returns to the scene of his first major win this week at Oakmont Country Club. Els won his first U.S. Open at 24 in a playoff here and has since earned entry into the Hall of Fame. He’s won all around the world and to outsiders looked to have been living a charmed life. He played hard and partied with the best of them. His large frame and… Continue Reading

Butch Harmon Learned from the Best

butch smile

Butch Harmon has been voted the top golf instructor for what seems like forever. Few instructors/coaches/gurus, whatever you label them can boast such a heralded list of players that have heeded the gospel according to Butch. Of course there’s Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson and Greg Norman and Ernie Els and Freddy Couples. But there’s also Adam Scott, Davis Love III, Justin Rose, Stewart Cink, Rickie Fowler, Jimmy Walker, Lee Westwood, Dustin Johnson, Brandt Snedeker and Natalie Gulbis. And there… Continue Reading

“Yes Sir’s” & “WTF’s” from The Masters

masters flag hole

Danny Willett’s surprising win at The Masters was great drama. Unfortunately, for many it will be Jordan Spieth’s uncharacteristic meltdown that defines the 80th Masters. And that’s regrettable because because Willett played flawless golf in the final round and looks to be quite an interesting character. It was a splendid week at Augusta…and I saw most of it from my couch. Here are some of the “Yes Sir” moments and a few of the “WTF” moments that marked my Masters… Continue Reading

A Brutal Day at The Masters…Spieth Hangs On

So much for the walk-away Masters win for Jordan Spieth. Spieth called Augusta National “U.S. Opens conditions” today and the results certainly backed him up. Only four players were able to finish under par today and Spieth wasn’t one of them. Spieth’s two over 74 was just enough to keep him in the lead. It was brutally tough at Augusta National but Spieth’s round started out anything but. With birdies at the first and third he had it to eight… Continue Reading

Masters Thoughts Day One: Spieth Rules Again

masters flag hole

As they say you can’t win The Masters on Thursday but you certainly can lose it. Ernie Els looks like he tried to lose it on his first hole as he six putted for a nine… from 3 feet. It was the most painful thing to watch all day. Once again Jordan Spieth proves that he’s superhuman. Can we get a DNA test on this kid! So much for “Jordan is off his game.” His bogey free 66 was stellar.… Continue Reading

Rickie Fowler Makes a Million Dollar Ace for Ernie Els

fowler-ace

What do PGA Tour pros do on their off day?  Well, probably just about anything they want but a lot of them spend time at each others charity events. And that’s just what Rickie Fowler and some of his friends did today for Ernie Els and his Els for Autism Foundation.  Watch as Rickie sinks an ace for a cool million bucks and then all hell breaks loose.  Fowler said it was one of the coolest moments in his life.… Continue Reading

Spieth Just Continues to Amaze

spieth TOC

Jordan Spieth has picked up right where he left off from last year.  He sizzled again at Kapalua’s Plantation Course shooting an eight under 65 to get him to -24 and a five stroke lead over Brooks Koepka. On Friday Spieth joked how it would be great to get to 32 under par and beat Ernie Els’ tournament record by a shot.  But he did so with a smile on his face.  Well, The Golden Child, as buddy Justin Thomas… Continue Reading
