Happy Birthday Jack Nicklaus

jack n barbara

The Golden Bear turns 77 today and his plans are to play a little tennis, not golf and chill with the family. Sounds like a fine plan to me. As good as Jack was executing his shots on the course many say his real advantage was the mental side of his game. Jack’s ability to focus and maintain his game plan won him many a major. When Jack was at his best the saying went,’when Nicklaus stood on the tee… Continue Reading

My Scotland Adventure…Royal Dornoch

img_2691

We continued our Scottish adventure on Tuesday with one of our most anticipated days of the trip: 36 holes at Royal Dornoch. The debates rage on over which is the best course in Scotland…and the world and Royal Dornoch is always in the mix. Some rate the Old Course as the best but the history of The Open and Old Tom has as much to do with that as the course itself. Royal Dornoch usually sits right behind the Old… Continue Reading

Ben An Wins Long Drive with a Ball That Just Goes Too Far

pga balt

One of the fun things at the PGA Championship is their decision to reinstate the Long Driving Competition. They had done it for years before doing away with it but since 2014 we’ve seen some massive belts. Probably the most famous of its past winners has to be the Golden Bear himself. Way back in 1963 a young Jack Nicklaus smacked one 341 yards…with a persimmon clubhead. Who knows what he could have done with one of those high tech… Continue Reading

Jack Nicklaus Plays Host at The Memorial Tournament

nicklaus muirfield

Jack Nicklaus is the gracious host this week as the PGA Tour gathers at his Muirfield Village course for The Memorial Tournament. The high regard in which Nicklaus and his course are held is reflected in the strength of this field. It features Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy, the top three golfers in the world who are all coming off wins in their last starts. Many players put this event on their schedules as a show of respect… Continue Reading

Masters Flashback: 1986…Greatest Masters Ever

jack putter

Finally, it’s Masters Week and we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of Jack Nicklaus’ miraculous 1986 win. It was his record sixth green jacket and was the most improbable of victories. Jack was 46 and supposedly over the hill. But an historic back nine charge from The Golden Bear and some “choking” by a few players gave Jack his last and probably most unexpected major win. We’ve all seen the CBS footage many times but here’s a look at the… Continue Reading

A New Big 3? Not Just Yet

new big 3 4

The boys of the PGA Tour are taking a break this week from the FedEx Cup Playoffs but that hasn’t stopped the chatter about the New Big 3 or Big 4 depending on who is doing the chatting. Indeed the young bucks have laid claim to the 2015 season and have certainly made it a season to remember. Jordan Spieth with his Masters and U.S. Open wins had us on Grand Slam watch most of the summer and his near… Continue Reading

My Moments with Jack Nicklaus

jack usga me

On the rare occasions that a person is in the presence of greatness it can be a humbling experience. I had such an experience earlier this week when I was fortunate enough to spend some time with Jack Nicklaus. At the opening of the Jack Nicklaus Room at the USGA Museum I sat in the audience and listened to Jack and the USGA’s dignitaries and that was wonderful. Nicklaus must have told his stories hundreds of time by now but… Continue Reading

Jack Nicklaus Is Now a Buffalo Bills Fan

o'leary ball

We all know that Jack Nicklaus loves his Ohio St. Buckeyes but I think the Golden Bear just became a big Buffalo Bills fan. Jack’s grandson, Nick O’Leary was selected by the Bills in the sixth round of the NFL Draft. The Florida State grad set records in college and won the John Mackey Award as the nation’s best tight end. Jack has spent plenty of time at all his grandchildren’s sporting events and it’s a safe bet his Gulfstream… Continue Reading

Streelman’s Par 3 Win Makes A “Wish” Come True

2 winners, Streelman & Couch

Talk about karma or about the Golf Gods or about paying it forward! Today at The Masters Par 3 Contest there was a bit of all of that. The fans and history will remember that The Golden Bear came out of hibernation and had an ace while playing with Gary Player and Ben Crenshaw. They’ll remember that this was the year that Tiger Woods decided he was more a father than a golfer, at least for a day and had… Continue Reading
