My Scotland Adventure…to the Highlands

dsc00828

Our week in St. Andrews came to an end on Saturday morning as we headed north to the Highlands and our house in Dornoch. As in the Auld Grey Toon our accommodations were mere steps from the Royal Dornoch Golf club and a short walk into the quaint village of Dornoch. But before we settled down in Dornoch we had a quick stop to make on the Moray Firth. Lorne Rubenstein of “A Season in Dornoch” fame had recommended we… Continue Reading

My Scotland Adventure…Links, Scotch & Tattoos

DSC00679

Our week in St. Andrews continued to get better and better. We were sitting in the Crail clubhouse having lunch and we both said we couldn’t believe how each course, each day just kept getting better. True, warm sunny days had a lot to do with it but it was more than that. The quality of each course and the friendliness of the Scots combined to make each day a truly wonderful and memorable experience. Such was the case on… Continue Reading

Open Championship Preview: Holes 1, 2, 3

open 145th

It’s Open Championship week and the venerable Royal Troon Golf Club hosts the Open for the ninth time.  The course will play to a par 71 at 7,190 yards.  It sits on the Firth of Clyde on the south western coast of Scotland so as usual in links golf the wind will have plenty to say in deciding the Champion Golfer of the Year. Take a look at the opening holes. The 1st is a par 4, 367 yards. The… Continue Reading

Peter Alliss Calls Bulls**t on the R&A

alliss

Sometimes, most times if you are a conspiracy theorist, we never get the whole, true story…on just about any matter.  Today it’s golf, more specifically the women membership issue at the historic Muirfield Golf Club.  It seems that the male members have voted to keep the membership just that, all male and continue to exclude women from their membership rolls. Now the good old boys at the Royal and Ancient think this is politically incorrect and have pulled Muirfield, who… Continue Reading

Butch Harmon Learned from the Best

butch smile

Butch Harmon has been voted the top golf instructor for what seems like forever. Few instructors/coaches/gurus, whatever you label them can boast such a heralded list of players that have heeded the gospel according to Butch. Of course there’s Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson and Greg Norman and Ernie Els and Freddy Couples. But there’s also Adam Scott, Davis Love III, Justin Rose, Stewart Cink, Rickie Fowler, Jimmy Walker, Lee Westwood, Dustin Johnson, Brandt Snedeker and Natalie Gulbis. And there… Continue Reading

LPGA Fighting Winds in Hawaii

minjee lee

The LPGA is spending the week in paradise as the ladies tee it up in the Lotte Championship at beautiful Ko Olina Golf Club at Oahu, Hawaii. Minjee Lee leads at -10 after a stellar bogey free 66.  American Katie Burnett is two back in second place. Ko Olina is a splendid course on the south western shore of Oahu and the wind has been giving the players fits.  I was lucky enough to play there a few years back… Continue Reading

Good Stuff: Jim Herman Wins in Houston

herman trophy

Oh there’s some joy in Houston tonight. Jim Herman who’s toiled on the Web.com Tour and the PGA Tour since turning pro in 2000 did his best Cinderella Story impersonation today and won the Shell Houston Open. Herman, who few at the Golf Club of Houston could pick out of a lineup went toe to toe with a pair of heavyweights and was the last man standing. He started the day tied for the lead with Jamie Lovemark and while… Continue Reading

Larry Fitzgerald’s Golf Challenge

larry fitzgerald

Larry Fitzgerald and his division champion Phoenix Cardinals have the week off waiting for their next opponent, my money says it’s the Packers, so maybe Larry has a chance to get in a round or two. While Fitzgerald is an avid golfer and member of the exclusive Whisper Rock Golf Club, home to a dozen PGA players, his golf skills aren’t on the same level as his NFL talents.  He carries a 13.9 handicap but tallied 109 receptions this season for… Continue Reading
