Big Names Not the Way to Grow the Game at Olympics

rio golf

All right, I have to admit that Olympic fever is hitting yours truly. I have been addicted to NBC’s multiple platform broadcasts as I try to grab a little bit of all the competitions down in Rio. Sure, watching Michael Phelps, Katie Ledecky and the swim team is great and those high flying, gravity defying gymnasts are amazing. And of course the beach volleyball is fun. How aren’t they covered in sand? But I am not limiting myself to the… Continue Reading

John Feinstein: Earl was Tiger’s Problem

tiger driver 2

The Tiger Woods Watch has reached DEFCON 1 as the entire sports world awaits his return. There are rumblings that Tiger will make his umpteenth come back appearance at each and every tournament on the PGA Tour schedule. While the scene of his comeback is still a mystery the fact that he is close to being healthy isn’t. He’s been seen hitting balls at clinics and course openings and a few insiders have witnessed Woods go after the ball at… Continue Reading

Tiger Woods One Upped By a Kid

tiger bluejack

It’s been over three week since I’ve written anything about Tiger Woods.  In the golf media world that’s a lifetime and a sure way to miss out on readers and plenty of web surfers clicking on your site.  But Tiger and his travails have not been truly newsworthy in my opinion. A sure way to garner traffic and readers is to have Tiger’s name in the headline  and write about him regularly, just peek at any of the golf websites… Continue Reading

The Eternal Struggle: Tiger Woods vs Dan Jenkins

tiger player trib

November is usually the time for the golf season to finally wind down. The PGA Tour goes quiet and the European and LPGA Tours wind up their season ending championships this week. Normally those two tournaments would be the big story in golf, but not this week. Tiger Woods, who usually hogs all the headlines in golf, has done so again. And not with his clubs but with his pen.  In a surprising reversal of roles Woods has put down… Continue Reading

Erik Compton Happy to Just Play Golf

by Jeff Skinner Sunday at the U.S. Open means Father’s Day and the many stories that all these golfers have about their dads. Sometime these guys can seem bigger than life but it is not uncommon to see these guys get emotional when they start talking about their dads or about being a dad. One dad that is out there today playing in the biggest round of his life is Erik Compton. Compton is a miracle in soft spikes and… Continue Reading

Rule Breaking Singh Deserves Suspension

by Jeff Skinner Vijay Singh was probably pulling for Phil Mickelson’s birdie putt for a 59 to fall more than anyone yesterday.  Maybe that would have given the hall of famer a brief respite from the painfully bright spotlight of media scrutiny that Singh finds himself in. Having admitting to taking the a banned substance Singh violated the PGA Tour Drug Policy and is subject to discipline from the tour.  Singh could face a year suspension and a fine but… Continue Reading

The Best Year No One Saw

by Jeff Skinner It was no surprise that Rory McIlroy was voted best male player of the year by the Golf Writers Association of America.  The surprise was that he wasn’t a unanimous choice.   Some writers must place way too much weight on the FedEx Cup as three of them choose Brandt Snedeker over McIlroy.  Even more surprising was the single ballot cast for Tiger Woods.  Maybe someone wants an invite to TW’s new digs. Stacy Lewis was voted the… Continue Reading

Brandel Chamblee: Jack Is the Best Ever

by Jeff Skinner Brandel Chamblee has blossomed into one of the most interesting voices in golf.  His position on The Golf Channel has given him a very high profile among the golf media and he isn’t shy about voicing his opinion. Chamblee also uses his resources at The Golf Channel as all of his editorials are chock full of facts and data that the Golf Channel research department has mined for him. In Chamblee’s monthly column in Golf Magazine he… Continue Reading

Play Pebble Beach For Free!

by Jeff Skinner Each and every golf media outlet has given us their “U.S. Open Preview” in preparation for next week’s Open at Pebble Beach.  One of the best I found is on The Golf Digest/Golf World website.  It’s an interactive tour of Pebble Beach with hole by hole video flyovers.  I have read every preview in all the magazines but you know what they say about a picture being worth a thousand words.  It’s very true in this instance. … Continue Reading

Ken Green Makes His Comeback This Week

by Jeff Skinner For the four months prior to The Masters much of the world’s media, and all of golf’s media, were focused on the comeback of Tiger Woods from the biggest scandal in golf history.  This week we will be witness to another comeback to the course as Ken Green will make his first appearance on The Champions Tour since his horrific accident last June.  There won’t be any non-golf media at The Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf, after… Continue Reading
