rory sa open

The golf world was dealt an unexpected blow this week as Rory McIlroy announced he needed to withdraw from the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. McIlroy has been diagnosed with a stress fracture in one of his ribs and will need to rest to allow it to heal. There is no timetable for his return. The world number two had “toughed it out” by playing through the pain at the South African Open for a playoff loss to Graeme Storm and… Continue Reading

Jaime Diaz of Golf World poses a few of those in his piece,”Golf’s 10 Biggest Questions for 2017.” He starts off with who will be the best player and names a few of the top players as candidates but my money is on Rory McIlroy. I think Rors is fed up with all the attention placed… Continue Reading

The Rory Story

rory open press

With controversy swirling at Royal Troon in the wake of statements from two of golf’s top players it’s time to cut through the PR and marketing BS and speak plainly. Rory got it right and we all owe him a big “Thank You”for his candor even though it’s come a bit late and has become a distraction on the eve of the OPEN. None of the elite golfers in our game  (or any golfer, for that mater) has grown up… Continue Reading

Dustin Johnson poses with the trophy after winning the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa. on Sunday, June 19, 2016. (Copyright USGA/JD Cuban)

Sit down and take some time to read some of these pieces as the sports world reacts to Dustin Johnson’s breakthrough win at the U.S. Open and how the USGA screwed it up. Mark Broadie: Forget “Putt for Dough” It’s Hitting the Green That Matters

broadie

I am currently reading Mark Broadie’s “Every Shot Counts.” If the name doesn’t ring a bell, he’s the Columbia University business professor that revolutionized how the PGA Tour looks at scoring. That all important “strokes gained putting” statistic is Broadie’s baby. For years golfers thought that the total number of putts was the best indicator of putting prowess. Not so according to the good professor. Broadie’s book is full of heavy duty math and sometimes may be a bit difficult,… Continue Reading

Steve Scott vs Tiger Woods: Characters with Character

steve scott tiger woods

If you read this website with any regularity you know that I am not just a fan of all the internet websites on golf but also favor the printed media that covers our great sport. Sometimes I wonder why I subscribe to so many golf magazines when I can get most of the same content on the web. But many times the print articles don’t appear on the corresponding website right away or sometimes at all. And that is when… Continue Reading
