U.S. Open Day One: Weather Prevails

oakmont sky

Much less golf was played today at venerable Oakmont today than the USGA, the players and golf fans had planned on as a series of thunderstorms toyed with the championship throughout the day. The powers that be suspended play for the day at 3:51pm in  the midst of the third interruption due to Mother Nature. 10 Things I Think…PLAYERS Style

day players 2

1. I think Jason Day’s win at The PLAYERS was damn impressive. He took apart TPC Sawgrass the first two rounds with a 63-66 start. If the Tour doesn’t screw up the greens on Saturday he could have made a run at Greg Norman’s PLAYERS record of -24. 2. Day is a fun player to watch as he rips at the ball with a ferocity few players can manage. But he used his head this week and backed off the… Continue Reading

Day Leads PLAYERS after Record Tying 63

day players 16

The PLAYERS Championship opened just as one would expect…sort of. If you put the best golfer in the world on a firm fast course with soft greens and only a slight breeze he’s going to go low. But a 63…amazing. Jason Day played up to his ranking as the top golfer in the world and scorched TPC Sawgrass with a course record tying round that had him in the lead by two strokes on a day that let dozens of… Continue Reading

Butch Harmon Learned from the Best

butch smile

Butch Harmon has been voted the top golf instructor for what seems like forever. Few instructors/coaches/gurus, whatever you label them can boast such a heralded list of players that have heeded the gospel according to Butch. Of course there’s Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson and Greg Norman and Ernie Els and Freddy Couples. But there’s also Adam Scott, Davis Love III, Justin Rose, Stewart Cink, Rickie Fowler, Jimmy Walker, Lee Westwood, Dustin Johnson, Brandt Snedeker and Natalie Gulbis. And there… Continue Reading

Flop Shots: Greg Norman & Ted Bishop

norman fox

The world of golf doesn’t lack for over-sized egos. Whether you are walking down the practice range, through the hallways of any of the administrative bodies or watching the talking heads on any television broadcast egos abound. It’s one thing to have a bit of an ego when you’re involved in playing the game and playing with the world’s best. I mean who hasn’t told Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson how great they are? Same for Jordan Spieth and Rory… Continue Reading

Paul Azinger Comes Back to the Booth

azinger smile

Good news for every golf fan: Paul Azinger is coming back to work. According to reports, first reported by Jaime Diaz, and he never gets it wrong, Azinger will be the new analyst for Fox Sports replacing the recently departed Greg Norman. “Zinger” is a voice dearly missed. He has a resume that few analysts can match: he is actually a winning former Ryder Cup Captain. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg that is Azinger. Azinger is a… Continue Reading

Rickie, Rory, Jordan & More…A Great Week in Golf

spieth scruffy

Jordan Spieth is having a Woodsian run this season. His PGA Tour summary: 4 wins, 3 seconds, 1 third, 11 top tens, 14 top twenty fives and over $8.7 million. Oh, let’s not forget in November he won the Australian Open and in December he took Tiger’s Hero Challenge. That’s not a season it’s a career for most golfers. Rory McIlroy turns up lame just when Spieth is reaching his zenith. If Rory can’t come back soon Spieth may just… Continue Reading

Greg Norman Speaks

us open norman buck

Even though the U.S. Open is in the books the hangover still lingers. Especially on this weekend as we are once again treated to the Fox Sports coverage of the USGA’s U.S. Senior Open.  Joe Buck and Greg Norman may have received some knocks for their inaugural Open (Buck acted like a rookie, Norman said nothing as DJ lost it) but the two are back at it again as Tom Watson tries for his first Senior Open.  Norman who likes… Continue Reading
