Big Names Not the Way to Grow the Game at Olympics

rio golf

All right, I have to admit that Olympic fever is hitting yours truly. I have been addicted to NBC’s multiple platform broadcasts as I try to grab a little bit of all the competitions down in Rio. Sure, watching Michael Phelps, Katie Ledecky and the swim team is great and those high flying, gravity defying gymnasts are amazing. And of course the beach volleyball is fun. How aren’t they covered in sand? But I am not limiting myself to the… Continue Reading

Michael Greller: Team Spieth Will Be Fine

spieth greller 2

We all have watched Jordan Spieth for the past three years on the PGA Tour and I would like to say we watched him grow up but that’s not the case. Spieth was a mature adult long before he won at the John Deere Classic in 2013. And as amazing as his rise to the top of the golf world is his maturity, humility and total understanding that he isn’t the center of the universe and that other people matter… Continue Reading

The Amazing Jordan Spieth Wins The John Deere Again

spieth deere putter

It was déjà vu all over again at The John Deere Classic. In 2013 Jordan Spieth won here in a playoff that catapulted him into a trajectory unseen since Tiger Woods. Today Spieth, who struggled early, found a way to get it done and win in a playoff once again as he dispatched 47 year old journeymen Tom Gillis. Gillis shot a sizzling 64 and had finished the day at twenty under par and then waited for the field to… Continue Reading

spieth kids

We all will be treated to a full day of golf today as all the major tours are in action and being broadcast to us all day long. The gents of the European Tour made a great move in featuring links courses and scheduling the Scottish Open the week prior to the Open Championship.  The fields at the Scottish have become deeper and the courses have been spectacular. The star of the week so far has been the wonderful links… Continue Reading

Jordan Spieth Sizzles at The John Deere Classic

spieth deere 2015

So you are Danny Lee and you’re still riding high from your first PGA win last week at The Greenbrier. And you come out in the third round of the John Deere Classic and light it up with a nine under, 62 to capture the lead and you’re in great shape to go back to back. Right? Yes, under normal circumstances Lee would be in wonderful position to earn his second win in so many weeks. But there is a… Continue Reading

Chip Shots: Drugs, Spies, Majors & More

007

There is some wild stuff going on in golf right now including some suspensions, some spying and a whale of a fish story. Scott Stallings was suspended from the PGA Tour for violating the Tour’s Drug Policy. But he didn’t go all A-Rod or Barry Bonds on steroids. Stallings had taken an over the counter drug, not a steroid, prescribed by his doctor. After a players meeting explaining the policy he went to the tour and turned himself in. He… Continue Reading

3 Crazy Golf Questions

woods amanda 2

Here are a few “golf” questions I thought I would never, ever hear. Does golf really need Donald Trump? A while ago Trump was buying golf courses as a hobby but recently he is one of a handful of deep pocketed entrepreneurs that are some of the few that are actually building golf courses.  Like it or not Trump is a player in golf’s big time. The USGA and the PGA of America both have majors scheduled at Trump’s Bedminster… Continue Reading

Ravings from the Easy Chair

by G. Rennie For television watching golf fanatics this weekend was a perfect storm of close competition.  Of the five tours that are covered on American TV four were decided in playoffs!  I can’t remember that ever occurring before and the overlapping coverage commitments of CBS and Golf Channel had TV execs scrambling to cover the most compelling action. First up was the Scottish Open at Castle Stuart links otherwise known as Phil’s Show. That loopy lefty gave away the… Continue Reading

Jordan Spieth: A Real Cinderella Story

by Jeff Skinner Coming into this week’s John Deere Classic Jordan Spieth had been “living the life.”  Any nineteen year old kid that gets to travel the country teeing it up with the best golfers in the world has to be living his dream.   But Jordan Spieth’s dream turned very real yesterday as he willed his way to victory and changed his life forever. Spieth’s season is absolutely amazing.  He started the season with no status on any professional tour. … Continue Reading

Stricker Looking to Make History at the John Deere Classic

by Jeff Skinner Steve Stricker returns to his home away from home this week as he tees it up at what has to be his favorite PGA Tour stop The John Deere Classic in Silvis Illinois.  It’s almost like a home game for Stricker who played golf at the University of Illinois and he lives about three hours north in Madison Wisconsin.  Stricker says he loves living in the mid-west despite the tough winters. Playing in the friendly surroundings of… Continue Reading
