Ten Things I Think…Ryder Cup Style

ryder-16

1. After the USA Ryder Cup Team closed out their victory Davis Love III joked that all he did was “write some names down and drive a cart around.” But he was there as captain for a reason. The Task Force, including Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk who were on that losing team in 2012 felt they failed their captain and he deserved another shot. He got it and he did exactly the same thing he did in… Continue Reading

An Emotional Day Leaves Teams Spent and USA Leading

reed-cheer

It was an amazing day at the Ryder Cup as Team USA and Team Europe battled it out over a Hazeltine course packed with 45,000 rabid fans. The European Team won the morning foursomes 2 ½ points to 1 ½ points featuring a huge meltdown from the super pairing of Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed. The Americans squandered a 4 Up lead over Sergio Garcia and Rafa Cabrera Bello. The Europeans won four of the last six holes to scratch… Continue Reading

Wow! USA Sweeps Morning Session

ryder-16

No one but the most ardent and intoxicated US fan ever imagined a clean sweep of all four foursomes matches. Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed led from the start and bettered the powerhouse Euro team of Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson 3 & 2. Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler battled back from 2 down deficits, twice, to pull out a 1 up win over Rory McIlroy and Andy Sullivan. Jimmy Walker and Zach Johnson blitzed Martin Kaymer and Sergio Garcia… Continue Reading

At This Ryder Cup….Let the Players Play

ryder-16

The Ryder Cup was started by Samuel Ryder, a wealthy seed merchant with hopes of an exhibition that promoted the game of golf and the sportsmanship and camaraderie that goes along with it. I don’t think he would recognize it today. Since 1979 when all of Europe was added to the original Great Britain & Ireland Team the matches became competitive but the buildup and pressure surrounding the Ryder Cup has gone over the top. With the passing of Arnold… Continue Reading

Westwood Starts Ryder Cup Smack Talk

westy-ryder-cup-fist

The Ryder Cup Smack Talk has started already. European Tour stalwart Lee Westwood who will be making his tenth consecutive team has taken a page from the Seve Book of gamesmanship. Westwood is quoted as saying that Tiger Woods may be a distraction for the American Team. “I don’t know what impact there will be from having Tiger around. They have always struggled to find a partner for Tiger that’s been successful. He could have an adverse effect in the… Continue Reading

PGA Championship Picks…Glory’s Last Shot

pga balt

The PGA Championship starts today as we close out the major season a bit early. Those Olympics are screwing up everything…but that’s another rant. It wouldn’t be a major without the Links Life Golf Crew Picks so here we go. Fresh off his big win at the Open Championship is G. Rennie: So far this is the season of first time major winners and I think the trend is likely to continue. So my first three picks are from the… Continue Reading

Past OPEN Champs Perform, or Not

The R&A ensures The OPEN  is the most accessible of the four major championships by using thirty nine separate qualification criteria in setting the field of one hundred fifty players.  First of these many roads to The OPEN is status as a past champion with an age limit up to sixty. Sixteen players are in the field by way of at least once hoisting the Claret Jug. Some have acquitted themselves well while most have struggled, with eight missing the… Continue Reading

The Rory Story

rory open press

With controversy swirling at Royal Troon in the wake of statements from two of golf’s top players it’s time to cut through the PR and marketing BS and speak plainly. Rory got it right and we all owe him a big “Thank You”for his candor even though it’s come a bit late and has become a distraction on the eve of the OPEN. None of the elite golfers in our game  (or any golfer, for that mater) has grown up… Continue Reading

USGA Still Taking Heat for DJ’s Penalty

U.S. Open - Final Round

It seems like everyone in the golf world had an opinion on the Dustin Johnson/USGA rules snafu except DJ himself. Yes, he said during and after the penalty was assessed, in the scoring room no less, that he didn’t cause the ball to move but that was it. As we all carry on about his misfortune and the USGA’s fumble DJ is laying low, nowhere to be seen. Good for him. He’s handling the aftermath as classy as he did… Continue Reading
