At Long Last, The Ryder Cup is Back Home!

love-trophy

It’s been eight long years since a US side hoisted the Ryder Cup but it’s seemed like a lot longer as the specter of European Team dominance in this event has enveloped USA Team golf. The US Ryder Cup effort has had as much recent acrimony and controversy as a presidential election campaign but that can be forgotten now as this 17-11 win wipes out some of the sting of past failures. For sure it’s a redemption for Captain Davis… Continue Reading

My Scotland Adventure ….Continues

DSC00570

Our time in St. Andrews was marked by sunny days, links golf, bustling streets and a few nights out in a very friendly and popular village. The streets were always busy with tourists, golfers, shoppers and the pleasant folk of the Auld Grey Toon. We visited the ruins of St. Andrews Cathedral and stopped by Old Tom & Young Tom Morris’ graves, spent some time walking along the West Sands, hit the British Golf Museum and found a few spots… Continue Reading

The Other Tournament at Troon

open 145th

Philly Mick and Hammering Hank teed off today in a defacto match play scenario, winner takes all, for the Claret Jug, the Gold Medal and the appellation “ Champion Golfer of the Year”. None of the other  seventy nine golfers playing the links at Royal Troon today had a reasonable chance to win this championship so we had, in effect a tournament within the championship. Either Phil on Henrik would be crowned king of the golfing world, for this week… Continue Reading

Casey Martin & His Oregon Ducks are National Champions

martin

I absolutely loved watching the NCAA Division 1 Championships this week, both the men and the women. That match play format just screams drama and suspense. And dramatic it was as Oregon and Texas went to extra holes before Sulman Raza a home grown Duck topped Taylor Funk (Fred’s boy) in 21 holes to give Oregon its first NCAA golf championship. Oregon coach, Casey Martin has to be living the dream. He grew up on the Eugene Country Club golf… Continue Reading

Jordan Spieth: “I’m Not Really Sure What Happened”

spieth louie wgc

Jordan Spieth was playing well this week at The WGC Dell Match Play Championships until he hit the range this morning.  Spieth had gone 3-0 and was paired against Louis  Oosthuizen who had looked just as impressive and shared Spieth’s 3-0 record. Once Spieth started warming up this morning he realized his game had deserted him and he was slicing the ball.  Welcome to  the world of mere mortals Jordan. “I was hitting some slices with my irons,” he said. … Continue Reading

It’s Tiger’s Era No Longer

rory wells

For a long while now we have been listening to the cries that golf won’t survive when Tiger Woods is done. Well, Tiger hasn’t won a major in seven years, has created some great excuses (non-firing glutes) and now has an acute allergy to fairways. And the game is just fine. With all due respect to Mark Twain, reports of the death of golf have been greatly exaggerated. Just look at the past few weeks on the PGA Tour. Working… Continue Reading

Rory McIlroy Wins WGC Match Play

rory match play

Rory McIlroy earned his tenth PGA Tour win and second World Golf Championship with his 4 & 2 win over Gary Woodland.  Rory made a habit of getting behind in his early matches and then staging a late comeback for the win.  But he needed no such theatrics against Woodlawn as he cruised to victory. Rory references his Ryder Cup win over Rickie Fowler saying it gave him confidence in match play.  The Ryder Cup…it is never out of the… Continue Reading

Rory McIlroy Wins at Match Play but Loses to 17 Year Old

rory arm wr

Rory McIlroy may have had an easy time with the new and not so improved Jason Dufner in the first round of the WGC-Cadillac Match Play (he won 5&4) but he didn’t have it so easy earlier this week. The number one golfer in the world was smoked by a 17 year old amateur when he challenged McIlroy to an arm wrestling match. At a junior clinic in San Diego Brad Dalke figured he’d try his luck against Rory. Now,… Continue Reading

New Format Marks WGC-Cadillac Match Play

wgc match play

Tomorrow marks a new era in the PGA Tour’s Match Play legacy when the WGC-Cadillac Match Play begins at Harding Park in San Frisco. After years of dealing with many big names losing early and therefore being left with some not so household names for the weekend the format has been restructured to insure that all players get at least three rounds of golf. The 64 golfers are broken down into sixteen different groups of four players. Each will play… Continue Reading
