Hot Stuff & Some Not So Hot Stuff On Day One

pga balt

It was a hot day in jersey as the players at the PGA Championship sweated their way around Baltusrol. Surprisingly, some big names were feeling the heat and failed to capitalize on a course that was ripe for a low score. Here are some Hots and some Not So Hots from Thursday’s golf. Hot: Jimmy Walker shot an opening round 65, his lowest ever in a major to earn a one shot lead at five under par. Little know Emiliano… Continue Reading

Gerina Pillar Moving Towards That Elusive First Win

pillar swing

Gerina Pillar may have come up short in at the Volunteers of America Texas Shootout but this is a player who seems so very ready to win. We first heard of Pillar awhile back but she was billed as a member of the ”husband and wife” who both play professional golf. Indeed, her husband Martin is on the PGA Tour for his second full time season and the two of them were both in contention last week in their respective… Continue Reading

LPGA Fighting Winds in Hawaii

minjee lee

The LPGA is spending the week in paradise as the ladies tee it up in the Lotte Championship at beautiful Ko Olina Golf Club at Oahu, Hawaii. Minjee Lee leads at -10 after a stellar bogey free 66.  American Katie Burnett is two back in second place. Ko Olina is a splendid course on the south western shore of Oahu and the wind has been giving the players fits.  I was lucky enough to play there a few years back… Continue Reading

10 Things I Think & More

scott honda trophy

1. It goes to show you…you never know in this game. While all of us are crowning the twenty-somethings as the new Big 3 Adam Scott comes through and shows us what a 35 year old can do on a tough course. On Saturday with a quadruple bogey on fifteen he looked to have lost his chance. But a determined attitude and a new confidence with his putter allowed him to fight back and win for the first time since… Continue Reading

Remember When: Michelle Wie Plays in the Sony Open

michelle wie sony 04 fist

Week two of the ’16 PGA Tour season stays in paradise this week at The Sony Open played over the Waialae Country Club on Oahu. Spending a few evenings watching golf from Hawaii makes me anxious to get back on the course again. It seems like the Sony Open has been around forever but it only started in 1999. The 2004 Sony Open featured one of the most significant debuts in golf. But it wasn’t a PGA Tour player that… Continue Reading

A Quick Pick Six

grillo

1. Props to Emiliano Grillo for hanging in there and beating Kevin Na in a playoff for his first win at the Frys.com Open. He’s had eight starts on tour but this was his first event as a full member of the PGA Tour. With his win he gets an invite to The Masters, a two year exemption to the PGA Tour and $1.8 million. Not bad for a 23 year old kid. 2. While the PGA Tour was starting… Continue Reading

Team USA Delivers an Amazing Victory at The Solheim Cup

The Solheim Cup - Day Three

The American Solheim Cup Team pulled off an Brookline-like comeback today at the 2015 Solheim Cup to break the European Team’s hold on the cup. Faced with the almost insurmountable and memorable deficit of 10-6 the ladies of Team USA were in need of a Ben Crenshaw style miracle. Well, Juli Inkster isn’t Gentle Ben but she’ll go down in history as having as much faith in her troops as he did and that faith was well founded. Team USA… Continue Reading

Rickie, Rory, Jordan & More…A Great Week in Golf

spieth scruffy

Jordan Spieth is having a Woodsian run this season. His PGA Tour summary: 4 wins, 3 seconds, 1 third, 11 top tens, 14 top twenty fives and over $8.7 million. Oh, let’s not forget in November he won the Australian Open and in December he took Tiger’s Hero Challenge. That’s not a season it’s a career for most golfers. Rory McIlroy turns up lame just when Spieth is reaching his zenith. If Rory can’t come back soon Spieth may just… Continue Reading

Jinxed by Cover Shoot, Wie Withdraws from Kingsmill

golf mag wie

Just about the same time Golf Magazine, the printed version, was hitting our mailboxes Michelle Wie was teeing it up at the LPGA’s Kingsmill Championship. Wie who continues to be the biggest draw in women’s golf graced the cover of the June issue and she’s featured on eleven pages of this issue.  First she gives us four tips on how we can rip our driver like she does (yea right) and then she’s the subject of The Golf Magazine Interview… Continue Reading
