Ten Things I Think…PGA Championship Style

Jimmy Walker

Golf is a strange game. Jimmy Walker wasn’t on anyone’s hot list coming into the PGA Championship. His 2016 season hadn’t been anything special. He had managed only three top tens with five missed cuts including the the U.S. Open and the Open Championship. And then he goes out and takes the PGA in a wire to wire win. What a strange game and what a week for Walker. After years of winless seasons Walker started to win soon after… Continue Reading

Jimmy Walker Holds Off Jason Day at PGA Championship

walker trophy

Jimmy Walker continued the 2016 trend of first time major winners at the PGA Championship today with his one shot victory over defending champ Jason Day. Danny Willett started the season with his Masters win and Dustin Johnson captured the U.S. Open for his first major. Just two weeks ago Henrik Stenson dazzled at the Open Championship and today Walker made it a quartet of first time major winners. The last time we saw all four majors go to first… Continue Reading

by Jeff Skinner Mike Weir’s dream come true comeback was put on hold today by Brendon Todd who out lasted Weir to win the HP Byron Nelson Championship. Weir has been valiantly trying to regain his Masters winning form that has been taken from him due to multiple injuries. But he’ll have to wait at least another week before he can try and win for the first time since 2007. Instead, the dream come true belonged to the 28 year… Continue Reading

Quiz Time: History of The Masters

by Jeff Skinner Think you know your Masters history?  Try taking AP Golf Writer Doug Ferguson’s Masters History Quiz.  He asks some tough questions.  Ferguson is the hardest working man in golf and has proposed some interesting questions.  This isn’t for the casual fan, there are some hardcore questions here.  Give it a try and if you get them all you’re a better man than I.  Here’s the first question, then click here for the rest. 1. 10 Things I Think & More

by Jeff Skinner 1.  Fifteen year old Lydia Ko is one amazing teenager.  She just added her third win in a professional tournament at the New Zealand Women’s Open.  But she’s still an amateur and has no plans to turn pro until after college.  Oh yea, she won the U.S. Women’s Amateur last year too.  It doesn’t seem to matter to her whether there is money on the line or not. 2.  Rocco Mediate comes out blazing in his first… Continue Reading

Can a Short Hitter Win a Wet Masters?

by Jeff Skinner The rain that has softened Augusta National prompted three time champion Phil Mickelson to say that this week’s Masters could turn into a “birdie fest.”  If the greens are soft and very receptive the Masters hopefuls will be able to shoot at every pin and play the type of “fearless” golf that Mickelson says wins Masters. If the weather reports hold true there will be more rain to deal with on an already wet course. It is… Continue Reading

Historic Riviera Country Club, Always a Tough Test for PGA Tour

By Jeff Skinner Pebble Beach is a tough act to follow but the PGA Tour is up to this task this week when it visits another iconic gem of a course at Riviera Country Club.  It may not possess the breathtaking views of the Pacific but the course certainly rivals Pebble in history and design.  Players love playing here and architects love studying this 1926 George Thomas design.  Tom Fazio touched up Riviera in 2008 and Ben Crenshaw reworked the… Continue Reading

Haney Says Phil’s The Masters Favorite, Not Tiger

by Jeff Skinner Sometime breakups work out, sometimes they don’t.  The Tiger Woods/Hank Haney relationship ended poorly and even though both sides tried to gloss it over with the “time to move on” and “needed a change” story it wasn’t a pretty ending.  Hank has done himself a disservice the past months with his critique of Tiger and his new coach, Sean Foley. Before the breakup, Haney rarely spoke out of turn and never offered any inside info on Tiger. … Continue Reading
