Happy Birthday Jack Nicklaus

jack n barbara

The Golden Bear turns 77 today and his plans are to play a little tennis, not golf and chill with the family. Sounds like a fine plan to me. As good as Jack was executing his shots on the course many say his real advantage was the mental side of his game. Jack’s ability to focus and maintain his game plan won him many a major. When Jack was at his best the saying went,’when Nicklaus stood on the tee… Continue Reading

Chip Shots from My Couch

trump-nick

It’s official: I’ve played my last round of 2016.  Freezing temps have closed all the courses in the Hudson Valley and as I am writing this snow is falling outside.  But that didn’t stop me from walking a few holes today. Instead of a boring walk through the neighborhood I headed up to James Baird State Park, an old Robert Trent Jones design and choose to walk a few holes (without clubs) to get myself off the couch and maybe… Continue Reading

Tiger Woods Always Moves the Needle

tiger-smile

You may have stashed your clubs away for the winter and the calendar is certainly closer to St. Nick than St. Andrews but this is a big week in golf. No, it’s not a major or a playoff or anything close but this week Tiger Woods is back on the course. And that’s a big deal no matter what time of year it is. Tiger may be the host of his Hero World Challenge at the exclusive Albany Golf Club… Continue Reading

Big Names Not the Way to Grow the Game at Olympics

rio golf

All right, I have to admit that Olympic fever is hitting yours truly. I have been addicted to NBC’s multiple platform broadcasts as I try to grab a little bit of all the competitions down in Rio. Sure, watching Michael Phelps, Katie Ledecky and the swim team is great and those high flying, gravity defying gymnasts are amazing. And of course the beach volleyball is fun. How aren’t they covered in sand? But I am not limiting myself to the… Continue Reading

Ben An Wins Long Drive with a Ball That Just Goes Too Far

pga balt

One of the fun things at the PGA Championship is their decision to reinstate the Long Driving Competition. They had done it for years before doing away with it but since 2014 we’ve seen some massive belts. Probably the most famous of its past winners has to be the Golden Bear himself. Way back in 1963 a young Jack Nicklaus smacked one 341 yards…with a persimmon clubhead. Who knows what he could have done with one of those high tech… Continue Reading

Jack Nicklaus Says Troon Tops Turnberry

henrik phil

As Henrik and Phil were going at it yesterday many of us referenced 1977 at Turnberry when Nicklaus and Watson went head to head in the classic Duel in the Sun. I stated that I thought Stenson and Mickelson had outplayed Watson and Nicklaus by the sheer brilliance of their play. And I am not alone. The Golden Bear himself thinks so too. Nicklaus, who rarely watches a full round of golf, released these comments on Twitter praising Stenson and… Continue Reading

Brilliant! Henrik Stenson Wins Open Championship

henrik kiss

Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson delivered what we all hoped for today in the final round of the Open Championship. The word they like to use across the pond to describe something this impressive is brilliant. But this was more than brilliant, it was exceptionally brilliant. Stenson not only broke through for his first major win but he did it in record breaking fashion with a final round that will be remembered as one of the best of all time.… Continue Reading

Golf in the Olympics: I’m Done…for Now

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy speaks t

Let it be known that this will be my last piece with any mention of the Olympics, golf in the Olympics, players in the Olympics, players not in the Olympics, the Olympic Flame, the Olympic Rings, Olympic Paint…anything Olympic…at least until we crown the Champion Golfer of the Year. All this Olympic baloney is taking the focus away from the oldest and maybe the greatest major of them all. That being said I need to vent for a bit before… Continue Reading

Forget the Big 3…We Have The Wild Bunch

wild bunch

All season there has been much written about a new Big 3 in golf. Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy had won plenty of tournaments and in many eyes appeared to separate themselves from the pack. Sure, some of it was their victory totals but I think much of it was their “likability” factor. All are young, strong, attractive with interesting backstories. We golfers love our history and after Tiger Woods’ departure from contention we wanted something to hold… Continue Reading

Welcome to Bushwood

bushwood

As the grand poobahs of the USGA Rules Committee were trying to hijack the U.S. Open Championship on Sunday I was half expecting an appearance by Judge Smails to add even more comic insult to a bizarre turn of events during the competition. Many golf fans had expected Dustin Johnson to, at some point in the final round, “step on his Johnson” but his step was true while the USGA trampled all over it’s own member in questioning the ruling… Continue Reading
