Lexi Thompson Dominates in Thailand

lexi throphy

When Lexi Thompson turned professional the folks at Cobra/Puma jumped on her to endorse their products and be their female face of golf.  They saw the huge potential in the teenager that drove it as long as the boys.  And Thompson has lived up to their expectations and more. The 21 year old Thompson continued to impress with a dominating victory at the Honda LPGA Thailand for her seventh LPGA title and third in just seven months. Thompson cruised to… Continue Reading

Pebble Beach: Always a Must Play

pebble beach tree

Consider this my mid-winter rant. Right now it’s 17 degrees with a windchill of two degrees here in the Hudson Valley and a forecast to get colder through the weekend. Last week’s warm temperatures that allowed a few dedicated golfers to sneak in a winter round is nothing but a memory with no chance of a repeat now. But I keep telling myself all is not lost. I get to watch the PGA Tour on one of the most beautiful… Continue Reading

Phil Mickelson’s Grand Slam Quest Falls Short

phil usopen r4 cham

Phil Mickelson’s 2015 chase for the career grand slam came to a end today, a painful end. Phil was out of contention from the first tee ball today, really the first tee ball yesterday, and as it usually goes when he has no chance it became a tortuous march to the last hole for him. Unfortunately it got worse for Phil as he stumbled to an ugly double bogey seven on eighteen (which included a whiff from the rough) to… Continue Reading

10 Things I Think

rory omega

1.  All right, I can’t take it anymore. That Omega watch commercial with Rory McIlroy has pushed me to the edge. Is it too much to ask for a different song or something from the Omega people? I’ve heard that so much I want to jump off one of those Dubai skyscrapers.  2.  The Monday finish of the Honda Classic was the most exciting golf of the tournament. The weather certainly fouled up the weekend and the Monday golf while… Continue Reading

Ryder Cup Task Force Faces Huge Challenge

paul-azinger-ryder-cup-2008_t640

It has been a few weeks since the Europeans trashed the Americans at the Ryder Cup and then Phil Mickelson trashed Captain Tom. Phil’s evisceration of all things Ryder Cup prompted a storm of controversy that only recently has quieted. But that quiet we all hear coming from the PGA of America right now isn’t really quiet at all. Because the PGA didn’t waste any time in reacting to that resounding defeat and Phil’s (and everyone else’s) criticism. They took… Continue Reading

Caddie Association Waiting On PGA Tour

by Jeff Skinner Life on the PGA Tour is like living in Robin Leache’s old program, Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. The players on the PGA Tour earn millions, have the most lucrative pensions in all of sport and are coddled like royalty each week on tour. Their caddies…not so much. Last year a group of everyday PGA tour caddies got together to form the Association of Professional Tour Caddies to try and improve the lives of the professional… Continue Reading

Patrick Reed Wins, Boasts He’s “A Top 5 Golfer”

by Jeff Skinner As a young golfer, Patrick Reed was inspired by Tiger Woods as most golfers of his generation were.  When he broke through with his first win at The Wyndham Championship last August he was dressed in a traditional Sunday Tiger-like outfit of red shirt and black pants.  Instantly, that became his Sunday outfit.  If it was good enough for Woods it was good enough for Reed. At the Humana Challenge in January Reed was in his Sunday… Continue Reading

Open for Debate: Best Modern PGA Tour Players

by Jeff Skinner Oh boy.  Looking for something to debate other than Peyton Manning’s place in NFL history or whether or not Richard Sherman deserves his lambasting on Twitter?  Here it is: Golf World’s 100 Best Modern Players. Brett Avery of Golf World has used the data recorded by the PGA Tour since 1980 to come up with the best PGA Tour players in the modern era.  From his article:  Briefly, our Modern 100 sought to: • Intensely focus on… Continue Reading

Phil Mickelson: Golf Magazine’s Player of the Year

by Jeff Skinner The boys at Golf Magazine took a bold step in their December issue.   Going against popular thought, they named Phil Mickelson their Player of the Year.  The PGA Tour Players voted five time winner Tiger Woods as their Player of the Year but Golf Magazine incorporated a different criteria in selecting Phil.  His three world wide wins, including his astounding Open Championship was enough for them to choose Phil’s flair over Tiger’s numbers. We’re going beyond shots… Continue Reading

Another Year…Another Win for Dustin Johnson

by Jeff Skinner All the confusion and griping about the new wrap-around PGA Tour season hasn’t changed the way Dustin Johnson plays golf.  In his first event in the 2013 PGA Tour season he won at the Tournament of Champions.  In the new 2013-14 PGA Tour season Johnson once again showed he likes to strike early with another win in his first start of the season. Johnson put the pedal to the metal over the back nine of the WGC-HSBC… Continue Reading
