Li Holds Off McIlroy’s Comeback

rory omega

If you got up early this morning to catch the European Tour’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic you weren’t disappointed. Heck, I was already fired up from watching Roger Federer win his 20th tennis major at the Australian Open so I tuned into The Golf Channel’s early morning telecast and watched another former number one make his comeback.  Who needs sleep anyway? While the world is focused on Tiger Woods in San Diego Rory McIlroy is well on his way to… Continue Reading

Rory McIlroy Wins at Match Play but Loses to 17 Year Old

rory arm wr

Rory McIlroy may have had an easy time with the new and not so improved Jason Dufner in the first round of the WGC-Cadillac Match Play (he won 5&4) but he didn’t have it so easy earlier this week. The number one golfer in the world was smoked by a 17 year old amateur when he challenged McIlroy to an arm wrestling match. At a junior clinic in San Diego Brad Dalke figured he’d try his luck against Rory. Now,… Continue Reading

Tiger Woods Needs Less Thinking, More Swinging

Waste Management Phoenix Open - Round Two

On Wednesday Tiger Woods announced that he was taking time some time to work on his game. The last two weeks have been very disappointing to me, especially Torrey, because I never want to withdraw. Unfortunately, lately injuries have made that happen too often.  This latest injury is not related to my previous surgery. I am having daily physical therapy and I am feeling better every day.  Right now, I need a lot of work on my game, and to… Continue Reading

Anchoring Ban Power Play…PGA Tour vs USGA

by Jeff Skinner The old saying goes “The best defense is a good offense.”  Tim Finchem knows a thing or two about going on the offensive.  Finchem’s calculated dressing down of the USGA and the R&A on national television has resulted in a face-off between the ruling bodies and the PGA Tour. When the USGA and the R&A instituted the “comment period” I doubt they envisioned the PGA Tour balking and certainly never imagined that Finchem would make it so… Continue Reading

Finchem & PGA Tour Oppose USGA’s Anchoring Ban

by Jeff Skinner On Sunday PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem took some time to address the assembled press at The Match Play Championship on the Tour’s stance on the anchoring ban. The Commish says it’s the PGA Tour’s stance that a ban on anchoring would be bad for the game and more specifically for the PGA Tour. The USGA and the R&A notified us several months ago about their intention to put forward a proposal to change    essentially change the… Continue Reading

Phil’s Taxes…Wrong Place, Wrong Time

by Jeff Skinner It’s amazing how the Big Dawgs can always steal the spot light.  This weekend there were three great finishes in tournaments with two going to playoffs. On the European Tour, eventual winner Jamie Donaldson snuck into the lead and had to watch as potential tying putts by Justin Rose and Thorbjorn lipped out on eighteen. Scott Stallings blew a chance at The Humana Challenge with a water ball on eighteen and missed the playoff by a stroke.  Three… Continue Reading

Phil Mickelson Misses Shot, Gets Booed, Chargers Fall Asleep

by Jeff Skinner Sports freak Phil Mickelson stole the show at halftime of the Broncos-Chargers game last night in an attempt to raise a million dollars for charity.  With the crowd going all Bubba at the Ryder Cup, a pumped up Phil sailed his 56 degree wedge a bit too long.  And to top it off the San Diego fans let Phil have it with a chorus of boos when he missed the shot.  But Philly Mick did earn $50,000… Continue Reading

Feinstein Says “Same Old Tiger”

by Jeff Skinner Here’s how to get Tiger Woods to sit down and talk for twenty five minutes: sponsor his tournament, pay him a hefty fee and donate a bunch of cash to his foundation.  That’s what Chevron is doing this week at The Chevron World Challenge. As tournament host Tiger sat himself down and answered questions from the assembled media.  As usual there was nothing earth shattering but he said he is trying to build on the success he… Continue Reading

John Daly Back at Harbour Town

by Jeff Skinner We’ll get to see a few familiar sights at The Heritage this week: The landmark lighthouse that tells us it’s Harbour Town, that plaid jacket the winner gets and all that footage of Davis Love III as he wins this thing five times.  Another sight that is becoming less familiar on tour is that of the much slimmer John Daly.  The last time we saw Daly, he was hawking his goods out of his RV in a… Continue Reading

Tiger’s Sputnik Moment

by Jeff Skinner Tomorrow starts the dawning of a new era in golf.  The PGA Tour descends upon Torrey Pines in San Diego and we get to see the latest, but probably not the greatest version of Tiger Woods.  Woods returns to the tour after a 2010 season he would rather forget and an offseason spent with his new coach Sean Foley.  Maybe we can call it Tiger 4.0, his fourth new swing.  How about Tiger A.D. (after divorce).  The… Continue Reading
