My Scotland Adventure…Castle Stuart

castle-stu-pic

Our second Monday in Scotland had us on one of the best modern links courses on the planet.  Castle Stuart in Inverness sits on the Moray Firth with spectacular views all around. But its the course, built upon classically rumpled linksland and transitioning upward onto a bluff for awe inspiring views that makes this so very memorable. Gil Hanse partnered with Kingsbarns developer Mark Parsinen to sculpt a links that melds into the rugged landscape but feels like it has… Continue Reading

Rory’s Little Change Goes A Long Way

rory db

When players are slumping, and slumping is a relative term, they are searching for that magic fix. Unfortunately in most occasions that “fix” can take months to finally take hold so a player can dig himself out of his slump. Not so for Rory McIlroy. He won the Deutsche Bank Championship today after making a few changes over the weekend. He surged from six shots back of Paul Casey to earn his twelfth PGA Tour win and put a new… Continue Reading

Scots Get It Right, Look to Ban Donald Trump

trump 15

I’m yearning for the good old days. No, not the days of hickory and gutta percha. No, not the days of Bobby Jones and the Grand Slam. No, not the day of Jack versus Arnie or Jack versus Lee or everyone else. Not even for the days of Joe Willie Namath and my hometown New York Jets. I am yearning for the days when Donald Trump was just a rich big mouth buying golf courses and not a rich big… Continue Reading

Rickie Fowler … “Make It the Big 4”

Rickie Fowler said he would like to make the Big 3 the Big 4.  He wants a piece of that action and he did all he could to earn his place today. Fowler played steady golf down the stretch at the Deutsche Bank and when leader Henrik Stenson rinsed his tee shot on the sixteenth hole Fowler was there to pounce on the lead. Fowler’s 68 was good enough to win the second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.  Paired… Continue Reading

turnberry light

Our tour of golf across the pond continues today with the Ricoh Women’s British Open from historic Turnberry. For the past four weeks we have been treated to some wonderful golf from some amazing courses. A quick trip inland for the Senior Open Championship at Sunningdale where we visited the only non-links course of the trip and now… Continue Reading

Rickie, Rory, Jordan & More…A Great Week in Golf

spieth scruffy

Jordan Spieth is having a Woodsian run this season. His PGA Tour summary: 4 wins, 3 seconds, 1 third, 11 top tens, 14 top twenty fives and over $8.7 million. Oh, let’s not forget in November he won the Australian Open and in December he took Tiger’s Hero Challenge. That’s not a season it’s a career for most golfers. Rory McIlroy turns up lame just when Spieth is reaching his zenith. If Rory can’t come back soon Spieth may just… Continue Reading

Rickie Fowler Ready to Do the “Mickelson Double”

fowler scottish open

Rickie Fowler made a spectacular charge down the stretch to win the Scottish Open as he birdied the last hole to pull one clear of fellow American Matt Kuchar. Fowler seemed to be treading water for most of the final round at Gullane Golf Club but he put the hammer down when he needed to.  After a bogey at fourteen he went back to back with birdies on fifteen and sixteen and capped it off with brilliant play on the… Continue Reading

Scottish Open at Gullane: An Oldie and Still a Goodie

scot open

The European Tour’s Scottish Open is playing host to a number of American golfers and others that want to use this week as a warm up for the true links golf they’ll be playing next week at St. Andrews. Gullane Golf Club is getting great reviews from the players as being a fair but firm test of links golf. And it has been that way for a long time. While Gullane, the golf club was established in 1882 (that’s pretty… Continue Reading
