Big Questions for 2017

woods-gd

The 2017 golf season is here and as we golf fanatics look towards the future there are plenty of questions for the upcoming season. Jaime Diaz of Golf World poses a few of those in his piece,”Golf’s 10 Biggest Questions for 2017.” He starts off with who will be the best player and names a few of the top players as candidates but my money is on Rory McIlroy. I think Rors is fed up with all the attention placed… Continue Reading

Chip Shots from My Couch

trump-nick

It’s official: I’ve played my last round of 2016.  Freezing temps have closed all the courses in the Hudson Valley and as I am writing this snow is falling outside.  But that didn’t stop me from walking a few holes today. Instead of a boring walk through the neighborhood I headed up to James Baird State Park, an old Robert Trent Jones design and choose to walk a few holes (without clubs) to get myself off the couch and maybe… Continue Reading

At This Ryder Cup….Let the Players Play

ryder-16

The Ryder Cup was started by Samuel Ryder, a wealthy seed merchant with hopes of an exhibition that promoted the game of golf and the sportsmanship and camaraderie that goes along with it. I don’t think he would recognize it today. Since 1979 when all of Europe was added to the original Great Britain & Ireland Team the matches became competitive but the buildup and pressure surrounding the Ryder Cup has gone over the top. With the passing of Arnold… Continue Reading

Ten Things I Think…PGA Championship Style

Jimmy Walker

Golf is a strange game. Jimmy Walker wasn’t on anyone’s hot list coming into the PGA Championship. His 2016 season hadn’t been anything special. He had managed only three top tens with five missed cuts including the the U.S. Open and the Open Championship. And then he goes out and takes the PGA in a wire to wire win. What a strange game and what a week for Walker. After years of winless seasons Walker started to win soon after… Continue Reading

The Other Tournament at Troon

open 145th

Philly Mick and Hammering Hank teed off today in a defacto match play scenario, winner takes all, for the Claret Jug, the Gold Medal and the appellation “ Champion Golfer of the Year”. None of the other  seventy nine golfers playing the links at Royal Troon today had a reasonable chance to win this championship so we had, in effect a tournament within the championship. Either Phil on Henrik would be crowned king of the golfing world, for this week… Continue Reading

The OPEN Day One: Birds & Bogeys

open 145th

What a great day at the Open Championship. And that was just the weather the low scoring and Philly Mick threatening the low score at a major championship was an added bonus. Royal Troon was ripe for the taking and taken it was but Friday the forecast calls for typical Scottish weather so the odds of a low scoring round like today aren’t looking good. Here are some birdies and bogeys and from round one of the Open. Birdies… Phil… Continue Reading

Flashback to 2014: Phil Mickelson shocks the golf world with is post Ryder Cup take down of captain Tom Watson. 10 Things I Think

snedeker pebble trophy

1.  Some will ridicule Brandt Snedeker for breaking down and fighting back the tears after his win at Pebble Beach. Not me, I think it is great. Emotion is so much a part of our lives and our game it’s fine with me. Sneds has become the tour’s new Steve Stricker who cried each time he spoke into a microphone. 2.  Dustin Johnson is rounding into form after his six month sabbatical. After a missed cut last week he finished… Continue Reading

Spieth Leads Hero World Challenge, Tiger Stumbles

spieth hero

I am usually not a fan of these Silly Season limited field cash grabs. I understand it’s a chance for many players to pocket some guaranteed, low pressure money and the tour makes some bucks and a few sponsors get some added screen time. But for my money Thanksgiving through New Year’s should be some much needed down time for these world weary golfers. And has the PGA Tour ever heard of over saturation? As much as I love watching… Continue Reading

Jack Nicklaus Defends Old Friend Tom Watson

tom watson jack nicklaus 14 ryder

While many, including myself have criticized Tom Watson for his unprepared and detached Ryder Cup captaincy Old Tom got some support from an old friend. Jack Nicklaus says the European Team “just played better” and he is absolutely right, they did. Nicklaus went on to say that the hits Watson is taking are undeserved. “(The Europeans) just played better,” Nicklaus said. “It doesn’t make any difference how much planning you do, if the other team plays better, they’re going to… Continue Reading
