Swafford Closes Fast to Win CareerBuilder Challenge

hud

With half a dozen players bunched at the top of the leaderboard of the CareerBuilder Challenge it looked like extra holes would keep some players from watching the NFL Playoffs. But Hudson Swafford is a big fan of the Atlanta Falcons and he wasn’t ready to miss his team try to get to their second Super Bowl. Swafford called a blitz coming down the stretch and he birdied three of his last four holes to pull ahead and eek out… Continue Reading

Rory McIlroy Sidelined with Rib Fracture

rory sa open

The golf world was dealt an unexpected blow this week as Rory McIlroy announced he needed to withdraw from the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. McIlroy has been diagnosed with a stress fracture in one of his ribs and will need to rest to allow it to heal. There is no timetable for his return. The world number two had “toughed it out” by playing through the pain at the South African Open for a playoff loss to Graeme Storm and… Continue Reading

Yowser! Justin Thomas Shoots 59

59 thomas

Wow! When Justin Thomas gets on a roll he stays on a roll. Fresh off his win at the SBS Tournament of Champions he scorched the Waialae Country Club course with a record setting 59. Record setting because the 23 year old pro is now the youngest player ever to card a 59. Thomas’s round included 8 birdies, 1 bogey and 2 eagles including his eagle putt on his last hole, the ninth to get him to -11 for the… Continue Reading

Tin Cup 20 Years Later: “this is our immortality”

00349202.JPG

Earlier this month when I got my hard copy of Golf Magazine I was treated to a great article by Chris Nashawaty and now finally it has been posted on Golf.com. (See, buying actual magazines still pays off.) This year marks the 20th anniversary of one of the most iconic golf movies ever made: Tin Cup. Nashawaty spent some time with many of the culprits that worked on the movie but from the sound of things it didn’t seem there… Continue Reading

Lots of Squeaky Chalk at Baltusrol

pga balt

The two leading drivers of the ball in the game today both got off to unexpectedly sloppy starts in the 98th PGA today in Springfield at Baltusrol’s venerable Lower Course. Playing with an early tee time in the best wind free weather of the day, Rory McIlroy could not take advantage of either the benign conditions or his prodigious talents. McIlroy didn’t hole one birdie putt today and totaled 35 putts for the round. At +4 he is nine back… Continue Reading

10 Things I Think…Henrik Stenson Style

stenson sit

1. Henrik Stenson is a fitting and deserved Champion Golfer of the Year. A 63 on Sunday at The OPEN puts him in the history books and probably makes him an official Scotsman now. 2. He hit so many clutch shots its difficult to say what the most important one was. But his scramble from the rough on sixteen to scratch out a birdie when Mickelson was looking at an eagle putt was crucial. He avoided what could have been… Continue Reading

The Other Tournament at Troon

open 145th

Philly Mick and Hammering Hank teed off today in a defacto match play scenario, winner takes all, for the Claret Jug, the Gold Medal and the appellation “ Champion Golfer of the Year”. None of the other  seventy nine golfers playing the links at Royal Troon today had a reasonable chance to win this championship so we had, in effect a tournament within the championship. Either Phil on Henrik would be crowned king of the golfing world, for this week… Continue Reading

Jordan Spieth Wins Again

spieth dean

So this is the Jordan Spieth we are supposed to see. The one that splits fairways, makes putts and even chips it in a few times. Spieth shook off his Masters meltdown and all the naysayers that were asking ‘what’s wrong with Jordan’. There’s nothing wrong with Jordan Spieth other than being held to too high a standard that he can only blame himself for. Spieth was his magical self at the Dean & Deluca Invitational as he was chipping,… Continue Reading

Jordan Spieth photographed on June 19th 2014 in Dallas TX

The U.S. Open is just a month away and the world’s best will be working on refining their game in the coming weeks as they head into Oakmont, their toughest test of the year. At the top of that list has to be the defending champion, Jordan Spieth who isn’t playing anywhere near the level he used to win two majors last season. Can Spieth regroup and settle down to find the magic that had him take the Master, U.S.… Continue Reading
