Shootin Quail at the Hollow!

These guys went low in the first round of the Quail Hollow Championship.

Tiger shoots lights out on his back nine (front nine) with six birdies for a closing thirty. Tiger hit 78% of the greens in regulation and T4 in putts per round. He said afterward that he felt he had the green speed down and that he is now able to practice all the time. If Tiger continues to hit the greens and he feels confident with his putter he could go really low again and put some distance between himself and the boys.

Phil shoots a 5 under 67 and is tied for second two strokes back. Phil raved about the course and said that the course is tough but allowed you to recover. “At least I was recovering,” he said. His scrambling stat was 100% so he was getting up and down from all over the place. On 18 he was hitting from the scoreboard and that had to be his shot of the day. Watch the Golf Channel video and see it at the 3 minute mark.

Paddy Harrington finished with balls in the water on 17 and 18 and ended with a triple and double. He loses 5 strokes on two holes to go from -4 to +1. That hurts.

Each time I saw Sergio he was hitting out of water or trouble. A triple on 18 killed him.

Steve Marino, (6 birds 1 bogey), Robert Allenby, (5 birds) and Jason Dufner (8birds 3 bogeys) all had great rounds and are tied with Phil for second place.

Retief Goosen, Jeff Maggert, Hunter Mahan and Lucas Glover are at -4 and tied for sixth.

That’s a sweet looking leader board.

****** News from the European Tour is that Big John Daly is 60 pounds slimmer and doing his best Ian Poulter imitation. Keep it up Johnny! Stay focused and get your act together. You’ll be getting those sponsor’s exemptions on the PGA Tour as soon as that suspension is over. Daly shot two under and is seven strokes back.

  1. Tiger rarely misses his greens. He is one of the most consistent I’ve seen. I’m sure when he retires at his prime, he could sell a hack load of money from DIY Home Videos that teaches a novice how to make that perfect swing.
