HSBC Champions Brings Out World’s Best

by Jeff Skinner

Lee Westwood gets to take his newly earned number one ranking out on the course this week as many of the world’s best golfers tee it up at The HSBC Champions in Shanghai, China.  Westwood will be defending his ranking against Tiger, now second in the rankings, Martin Kaymer who is third and Phil Mickelson who has dropped to fourth.  Graeme McDowell, who might have had the best season of anyone in 2010 will be in the field along with the Molinari’s, Louie O, Ryo, Casey, Quiros, Scott, Kim, Luke, Ernie, Miguel, Hunter, Rickie, Camilo, Goose, Rory, Paddy and Y.E. Yang.  If that isn’t enough to keep us up late and into the early hours of the morning I don’t know what is.  The Golf Channel coverage starts at midnight tonight.

Last year’s tournament had the potential to be a Tiger-Phil showdown, Phil had the lead with Woods two back, but Woods blew it with a poor opening front nine.  Ernie Els played himself into contention with a final round 63 and had the lead near the end until his ball found the water.  When all was done Philly Mick bested them both and had beaten Tiger head to head in two consecutive tournaments.  We all were set for the Phil and Tiger rivalry to blossom for the upcoming season and then a fire hydrant brought down Tiger Woods and his image machine.  This year we have enough top golfers playing to give us all the drama we need.

Check out this photo.  It looks like this these guys mean business.
