A Dozen Things I Think

by Jeff Skinner

1.  The funniest thing I saw all week was the timing of Caroline Wozniacki changing her picture on her Twitter account. Click here, you must see this. She’s posing as a witch over a cauldron, all Bubble, Bubble Toil and Trouble like. Rory immediately shot himself out of The Memorial with a 43 on his front nine in round two. Strange isn’t it?

2.  So Phil Mickelson spends more time denying any wrongdoing in an insider trading investigation than he does talking about his game. So what if Billy the Gambler gave him a tip on Clorox. Phil better hope these aren’t the same investigators that put Martha Stewart away. Prison would give a new connotation to “Phil the Thrill.”  Stacy Lewis n0. 1

3.  Stacy Lewis is one determined golfer. I think she has taken the roll of Bulldog away from Cristie Kerr. Lewis plays a game bigger than her tiny frame. She’s number one in the world …with a steel rod in her back. Amazing.

4.  It was fun to see Muirfield Village again. Having spent a week there for The Presidents Cup last year most of the holes looked familiar. But heck, it rained so much at the Cup the course played like an entirely different one this week.

5.  For awhile there it looked like the “new and relaxed” Bubba Watson was ready to go all Tiger Woods and win his third tournament of the ’14 season. But an out of bounds drive on fifteen sent him to a double bogey and that was the difference between a win and a third place finish.

6.  The air kind of left the Memorial’s balloon when Adam Scott made three straight bogeys and Bubba went OB. That left Kevin Na and Hideki Matsuyama in the mix. I could almost hear the channels changing across America.

7.  Props to Hideki Matusyama for hanging on while all those around him stumbled. He birdied eighteen four times this week but only needed a par in the playoff for his first PGA Tour win.  And he gets to hang with Jack Nicklaus. Life is good. Hideki n jack

8.  The LPGA is having one fine season. From popular winners, to sharing Pinehurst with the men, to Paulina Gretsky, to a new PGA Championship to Americans winning again it’s a dream come true for Mike Whan and his troops.

9.  Great news for fans of the Coolest Guy in Golf or the Most Interesting Man in Golf which ever you choose. Miguel Angel Jimenez has now qualified for the U.S. Open. He’s 27th in the Official World Golf Rankings and on his way to Pinehurst.

10.  There will be a Woods at Pinehurst…only its Cheyenne Woods not Tiger. She made it through qualifying and will represent the Woods Clan at the Open.

11.  I am glad I tuned in late to The Memorial. That way I missed all the Kevin Na shenanigans. I only had to watch him for one hole. And it was a lousy hole to boot.

12.  It was great to see a smiling and enthusiastic Cristina Kim back in the mix at the ShopRite LPGA Classic. She has found some form this season after years of struggling. The LPGA is better with Cristina on the leaderboard.
