Great Play Not Enough for Johnny Miller

by Jeff Skinner

us open logo 14During the NBC broadcast Johnny Miller commented on how “great a tournament we would have if Martin Kaymer hadn’t shown up.” Really Johnny? I would think that such an astute analyst as Miller would realize two things.

First, I will acknowledge that overcoming a five stroke lead is a daunting task. But that is why they play the game. Kaymer had been a machine making only one bogey during the first two rounds. Today he carded five bogeys which he offset by a birdie and an impressive eagle. But the point is that there is trouble on this course and a few mistakes are possible.

Secondly, if Kaymer does go on to walk away with this wire to wire win we should appreciate the fact that he played amazing golf. Opening 65’s followed by a gutty third round where he scratched out an acceptable score while others melted down is to be appreciated.

I understand where Miller is coming from: he wants a competitive event. We all do but when someone is able to play extraordinary golf we should celebrate it. Not worry about the television ratings.
