Pinehurst Journal Day 7

us open logo 14Day 7 of my Pinehurst Journey was Sunday at the U.S. Open. It was great to hear from my three kids as they wished their old man a Happy Fathers day as I started my day at Pinehurst.

I spent plenty of time on the practice range while the final few groups were warming up. As the men headed to the first tee more and more women appeared on the range and practice green in a scene that had never happened before.

There was Natalie Gulbis and Jessica Korda hugging Rickie Fowler. Martin Kaymer comparing putting strokes with a woman moments before he teed off.

It seemed surreal and actually very cool.

The crowds were massive and it was so hot that after my range trip and another spell in the merchandize tent I headed back to the relative cool comfort of the media center.

From there I watched the final round as I wrote story after story.

Martin Kaymer, Erik Compton and Rickie Fowler while not giving us much on course drama certainly are interesting stories.

These big time journalists may appear to have an easy life but I can tell you this there are plenty of big names in the media that work their butt off. Many of them were here when I arrived and they were here when I left and I was there for over twelve hours some days. Hats off to them all.

This is my last day in Pinehurst and I have come to appreciate this Sandhills Golf style.  Pinehurst was impressive and winning on Saturday at Whispering Pines cinched my love of the Sandhills style of golf.  The week was great on all accounts and I’d love to come back but I’ll make my plans to come down here in the fall when the temperatures will hopefully are a bit more accommodating.

The Links Life Golf Team was thrilled to cover the U.S. Open from the inside for a change and I am sure this won’t be the last time we get together for a major championship while having some major fun.
