Great Leaderboard at the PGA Championship

by Jeff Skinner

pga 2014It was amazing day at the 96th PGA Championship. With a water logged Valhalla allowing the world’s best to throw darts at the soft greens we were treated to a marvelous display of golf.

It was a true birdie-fest as player after player posted sub-par rounds which has resulted in a jammed packed leaderboard filled with big names, young studs and even some newcomers.

How gettable was Valhalla today? Very gettable. 74 players teed it up today and there were only 18 players over par today. That’s about as easy a major set up as we have seen in a long time.

Rory McIlroy didn’t have his best today but he was able to kick his game into gear on the back nine with birdies on three of the last four holes including a closing birdie which put him back in the lead. His up and down from the bunker on eighteen got him to -13 and gave him a one stroke lead over Bernd Wiesberger.   rory n day

Wiesberger is a 28 year old Austrian with two European Tour wins who tied for low round of the day today with a 65. He played with his hero today, Phil Mickelson who he beat by two strokes.

Rickie Fowler was another golfer that was able to stick it close all day but he wasn’t able to drain many putts. He was burning the edge of the hole all day. Still, he was able to shoot 67 and is in third place just two behind McIlroy.

Phil Mickelson sits three strokes back and is tied for fourth place mainly due to his exciting back nine charge. Phil the Thrill had stumbled with bogeys on eleven and twelve but got it going with a long birdie putt on fourteen. He then went on a roll and finished with birds on four of the last five holes. His eagle putt on eighteen just slid by the hole.

Jason Day played alongside Rory today and struggled to find his game. But he made an all-world par at the second hole after he pulled his drive way to the left and was lucky to even find his ball. He immediately bounced back with birdies but as the round progressed he was doing all he could to salvage pars. His three under 69 has him tied for fourth with Mickelson.

A quartet of golfers sits four shots back and tied for sixth. Louis Oosthuizen (67), Henrik Stenson (67), Mikko Iionen (69) and Ryan Palmer (69) are all within striking distance.
